Get psychedelically psyched, because tonight the first show in WESU’s Spring Concert series is going down in Wesleyan’s Memorial Chapel. The show is free and open to the public.

If you can’t join us in the Chapel, located at 221 High Street in Middletown, CT, you can stream the show live beginning at 7:30.

Doors open at 7:30. Featherwood Bee will take the stage at 8:00, Sidewalk Dave will take over at 8:45 and the Stepkids will melt faces at 10:00.

Here’s a run sown of some of what’s scheduled in the community this weekend.

Over at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, tonight  at 8, it’s Ari and Mia Friedman, a sister duet harmonizing as they explore the traditions of Southern Appalachia and Northeastern fiddle music. On Saturday, community yoga is offered at the Buttonwood Tree beginning at 8:45am. Also on Saturday at the Buttonwood, it’s An Afternoon with Liela Marie Fuller, a poet whose first collection has been called an emotional roller coaster ride from joy and happiness to sadness and pain.  Then Saturday night at 8, enjoy Federico Ughi’s music at the Buttonwood. His music infuses the New York avant garde sound with a sense of melody inspired by the Italian classical and folk traditions of his childhood in Rome. Then Sunday, and every Sunday, Food Not Bombs shares food at 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood. All are welcome to enjoy a free vegetarian meal. The promenade continues, submerging in all dimensions of lyric-centric pop: rock, soul, reggae, folk, R&B, punk, funk, post-punk, new-wave, jazz and wherever else the street winds, from the 1950s to the present. Pop music interspersed with spoken word tracks and poetry readings.

Here’s a run sown of some of what’s scheduled to happen in the community this week.

Over at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, tonight is Laughter Yoga with Clare, a free and fun stress-reliever, starting at 7 p.m.  Wednesday night at 7, the Buddhist film “My Reincarnation” will be shown. Filmed over 20 years by acclaimed documentarian Jennifer Fox, “My Reincarnation” chronicles a Tibetan Buddhist Master’s rise to greatness as a Buddhist teacher in the West, as his son breaks away to embrace the modern world. Thursday evening at the Buttonwood Tree, Alex Vans and the Hide Away performs indie rock at 8. Friday at 8, it’s Ari and Mia Friedman, a sister duet harmonizing as they explore the traditions of Southern Appalachia and Northeastern fiddle music. On Saturday, community yoga is offered at the Buttonwood Tree beginning at 8:45. Also on Saturday at the Buttonwood, it’s An Afternoon with Liela Marie Fuller, a poet whose first collection has been called an emotional roller coaster ride from joy and happiness to sadness and pain.  Then Saturday night at 8, enjoy Federico Ughi’s music at the Buttonwood. His music infuses the New York avant garde sound with a sense of melody inspired by the Italian classical and folk traditions of his childhood in Rome. Then Sunday, and every Sunday, Food Not Bombs shares food at 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood. All are welcome to enjoy a free vegetarian meal. Down in New Haven at Toad’s Place tonight is Dada, the 20th anniversary tour. Wednesday brings Big Gigantic, with Kill Paris and Dirty Bunny, followed by the weekly EDM Night. On Wednesday, it’s the Blues Jam with John Fries; this is one of the longest running open blues jams in New England. Thursday at 8 brings Little Ugly with Paper Hill Casket Company to Blackeyed Sally’s. Then Friday, John Fries is back, this time with his trio The Heat and special guest Matt Zeiner. At Wesleyan University on Wednesday at 8 p.m., author Siddhartha Deb will read from his recent work at Russell House, 350 High Street. Siddhartha Deb is the author of the novels The Point of Return and An Outline of the Republic. On Thursday at 7 p.m. at Wesleyan’s Memorial Chapel, 221 High Street, a senior music recital—“Music of the Night Chorus”—will be presented by Brian Goodell. At Real Art Ways in Hartford, Oscar-nominated short films, both animated and live-action, make up the bulk of the schedule through Wednesday.  Thursday, and every third Thursday, it’s the Creative Cocktail Hour, from 6 to 10 p.m., when creative people come together for conversation, art and music. The music will be by DJ Occult 69. Friday through next Thursday brings the film “Searching for Sugar Man,” nominated for an Oscar for best documentary feature, to Real Art Ways. Also on Friday: Michelle Ellsworth’s “Preparations for the Obsolescence of the Y Chromosome.” More can be found online at realartways.org.

At Cinestudio, Trinity College’s cinema, tonight’s film is “This Must be the Place,” with Sean Penn. Then Wednesday through Saturday, it’s “Skyfall,” nominated for five Academy Awards. FRIDAY: The Stepkids/Sidewalk Dave/Featherwood Bee

We unveiled our Spring Concert Series on Monday. Now we’ve got some updates on the first of these shows that WESU will be presenting.

Our first concert will take place Friday February 22 in the Memorial Chapel at Wesleyan University, located at 221 High St in Middletown, CT. Doors will open at 7:30 PM and the show starts at 8:00 PM.

The Stepkids put on a very psychedelic live show complete with video projection. The band comes from Bridgeport, CT and is signed to the legendary Stones Throw (owned by Peanut Butter Wolf and home to Madlib and J Dilla (RIP)). They call their music “futuristic electro soul” and their guitarist was once in Alicia Keys‘ touring band. Their debut album, The Stepkids, was released in 2011 and they are set to release a new album, Troubador in 2013.

Sidewalk Dave is a WESU favorite and fellow CT native. Here’s an interview we did with him last November. He plays rock & roll and his last album, Hard on Romance came out last year. Sometimes he wears pants!

Featherwood Bee is a self-described psychedelic merman surf rockin’ band straight out of Middletown, CT.

Saturday mornings at The Buttonwood Tree mean Chi Quong (Chee Gwong), Yoga, and spiritual alignment workshops. Saturday afternoon at 3 there is an opening reception for this month’s Art Gallery show celebrating the work of Peruvian born visual artist, Juan Carlos Bautista’s “Poetic Art”. Saturday night at 7pm, Steven and Resa Ferreira present Streetlight Stories: “Endings and Beginnings” for an evening of stories about healing and transformation, for adults. Saturday night the Wesleyan University Center for the Arts presents “Glass Guignol (geen gnol): The Brother/Sister Play” directed by Lee Breuer, who explores the life and work of Tennessee Williams in this production.
Also, on Saturday evening the Wesleyan University Center for the Arts presents: The Graduate Recital of Brian Parks entitled “At Wesleyan 2007-2013″ at Memorial Chapel, on High Street at 8pm. This event is free and open to the public. more online at www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

The Rusted Keys, the acoustic duet of Diane Kozikowski & Dave Downs, play on the third Sunday morning of every month, this Sunday, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Higher Grounds, 70 Main Street, East Hampton. Call 860-467-6643. The Keys perform a style of music they call “Nouveau Croon”.

At 7pm on Sunday, The Oddfellows Playhouse plays host to a night of comedy. Come be a part of an Improv event – live, unscripted, and unpredictable. Audience participation is welcomed. The Great Make Believe Society and Members of Sam Shaw’s Improv Boot Camp Workshop will be joining forces for this comedy event. At Cinestudio, Trinity College’s cinema, they are showing the 1942 black and white classic Casablanca starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. +Sing Out! Radio Magazine with Tom Druckenmiller comes on at 4 until 5am with a weekly, hour-long “magazine format” program, featuring interviews in addition to “live” and recorded traditional folk musics.

We hope life is getting back to normal following the historic Blizzard of 2013, and its aftermath. Many thanks to all of the public works employees, contractors, volunteers, good neighbors and first responders who have worked tirelessly and at times without thanks for the best interest of others during this challenging time.  

Here’s a run sown of some of what’s scheduled to happen in the community this week. Keep in mind that many venues and business were set back by the unprecedented weather we experienced this week and as such may not be back up and running yet. We suggest you check with venues directly to make sure they are open for business and are back on schedule.

Over at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown Tonight and each Second Thursday (of the month) brings Writers Out Loud! , a literary prose open mic w/host Cocomo Rock & co-host Al Bower, Jr. Doors open at 6:45 for sign-up, presentations begin at 7:15. Friday night Shawn Taylor’s Wandering Roots Trio & the Brian Dolzani Duo play “Fresh new songs, Deep Ol’ Roots” at the Buttonwood.

Saturday Mornings at the Buttonwood Tree bring Chi Quong (Chee Gwong), Yoga, and spiritual alignment workshops. Saturday afternoon at 3 brings an opening reception for this month’s Art Gallery show celebrating the work of Peruvian born visual artist, Juan Carlos Bautista’s “Poetic Art”. Saturday night at 7pm, Steven and Resa Ferreira present Streetlight Stories: “Endings and Beginnings” for an evening of stories about healing and transformation, for adults.

Each Sunday, Food Not Bombs shares food at 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood. All are welcome to enjoy a free vegetarian meal. You can help prepare it beforehand at First Church on Court Street at 11:30 am. Sunday afternoon  at 4pm brings the monthly gathering, Poetry Potluck, which is an opportunity for people who enjoy poetry to get together to share and discuss their favorite works. Down  at Café Nine in New Haven, tonight, the Lip Gloss Crisis 3rd Annual Valentines Day Show where’ New Haven’s own Dot Mitzvah will be the ringleader at this romantic circus-themed burlesque cabaret!  Friday night The Greg Sherrod Band and The New Dirty make for a night of Rock and Roll at Café nine. Saturday at 4pm it’s the weekly SATURDAY AFTERNOON JAZZ JAM w/ this week’s host Tony Dioguardi and Friends. Saturday night brings Daphne Lee Martin celebrating her new release, “Moxie” alongside Ellison Jackson.   Sunday’s SUNDAY-AFTER-SUPPER JAM will be hosted by Dom Zullo and the Cafe Nine All Stars. Up in Hartford at Blackeyed Sally’s tonight Jazz Vocalist Dana Lauren, to the Sally’s stage. Friday, Shaka and the Soul Shakers perform their Louisiana sound along with Two Virgins. George Clinton and parliament Funkadellic return to the Toads Place stage on Tonight night down in New Haven. The promenade continues, submerging in all dimensions of lyric-centric pop: rock, soul, reggae, folk, R&B, punk, funk, post-punk, new-wave, jazz and wherever else the street winds, from the 1950s to the present. Pop music interspersed with spoken word tracks and poetry readings.
