Good afternoon, it’s Friday, July 27th, and this is the Jive at Five – WESU’s Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. Here’s a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area:

Tonight, Infinity Hall in Norfolk presents the Brubeck Brothers quartet. The Oak Ridge Boys take the stage Saturday night and Tommy Emmanuel returns to Infinity Hall on Sunday. More at www.inifinityhall.com

Down in New Haven’s Café Nine tonight, it’s an ode to The Replacements, featuring a screening of Color Me Obsessed: A Film About the Replacements. Café Nine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam will be hosted by Tony Dioguardi and Friends. Saturday night Blue Plate Radio and Taste Of New Haven Present: a summer evening of culinary delights strolling through Downtown New Haven and ending with a world-class jazz, funk, and R&B show! Down in New Haven at Toads Place tonight is the Summer Slam Fest and Saturday night Shakedown plays the Grateful Dead And Beyond on the Toad’s main stage.  Rhythmic Circus and Carbonated Insight open that show. More can be found at toadsplace.com

Tonight in Hartford at Blackeyed Sally’s blues performer Dave Keller takes the Sally’s stage at 9pm and Saturday night, the Delta Generators take the stage there. More can be found at blackeyedsallys.com

Saturday at Center Church on the Green on Temple Street in New Haven “The Tallest Man on Earth” and “Strand of Oaks” will perform at 7:00pm. More info can be found at manicproductions.org

Here in Middletown tonight Vinnie’s Jump ‘n’ Jive presents a salsa dance party.  More about dance classes and events for young and old can be found at vinniesjumpandjive.com.

Also, here in Middletown tonight, Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts presents Steve Scionti’s “Hear What’s In The Heart: A Shoemaker’s Tale” at 8 pm in the CFA Theater. Middletown’s own Steve Scionti brings to life all the passion, comedy and drama inherent in a Sicilian-American family in a play co-written by director Anthony Crivello. On Friday night, at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, J Cherry and the Strawberries will perform a variety show entitled Voice of the City. This is a variety show from the heart of the community with performers of every style and sound, living, working, and creating in the city of Middletown and the surrounding area. It’s poetry, dance, song, comedy, and bits of wisdom. Where the community is the theater. Saturday night is a double header with Alli and the Oxen Frees and folk group Mumblty-Peg performing a benefit concert, with proceeds going towards Pathways To Go, Inc. The show starts at 8pm. Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of The Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. This Saturday also brings the return of the CT Traditional Jazz Fest to SHERATON FOUR POINTS HOTEL in Meriden.  This year’s festival features The Midiri Brothers, Galvanized Jazz Band, The Heartbeat Jazz Band, and more.  More can be found online at greatctjazz.org

Tis the season for farmers’ markets and here’s a few in our area:

The Durham Farmers Market is open every Thursday on the Town Green on Main St, from 3-6:30pm now thru Sept.   The Middletown North End Farmers Market is open from10am-2pm every Friday and is located at the corner of Liberty and Main Streets. The longstanding Middletown farmers’ market is located on the south Green and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. now through October.

Here’s a quick rundown of cinema off the beaten path here in central CT this week:

Tonight, Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartford, presents a week long run of the dramedy, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” Show schedules and descriptions can be found online at cinestudio.org

Tonight, Real Art Ways in Hartford begins a run of Paul Williams: Still Alive, a documentary that tracks down the actor/singer/songwriter. Tickets, times, and more at www.realartways.org

From 6:00 to 6:30pm 
it’s Free Speech Radio News from The Pacifica Network – An independently produced half hour daily national and international radio news program focusing on peace and social justice issues in the US and around the world. FSRN is collectively run by its workers and reporters.

At 6:30, until 8pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee – Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10pm, we take it
 From the Otherside with 
Rok-A-Dee – The Voice of Hartford, featuring local artists from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Spotlighting Caribbean R & B, Soca and international music.

From 10 until Midnight, take in
 the sounds of Rumba en el Patio

- Classic Salsa for the dancers, Afro-Latin Big Band for the discerning ear. Join us as we adventure through the history of Musica Latina!

At Midnight until 1:30am Saturday it’s

- Serious turntablism – Dubstep, DnB, techno, ragga jungle, breakbeats mixed live.

At 1:30am we go 
In the Master Bedroom, Under the Bed with 
Dope Dave 
until 3am – Celebrating conscious hip-hop and its offshoots & influences. Acrobatic emcees and down-tempo poets mix it up over varied oceans of sound.

At 3, to 4am it’s the Bassment Beats with DJ Lokash – the Real Hip-Hop is over here.

Then, we bring you
 Sing Out! 
from 4 to 5am, on a mission to preserve and support the cultural diversity and heritage of all traditional and contemporary folk musics, and to encourage making folk music a part of our everyday lives.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6:00 to 7:00am it’s
 the Celtic Café
 – Traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.
