Tonight at the Buttonwood Tree, its writers out loud at the buttonwood tree, when six phenomenal storytellers sign up seeking constructive critique of their latest works in progress. Come launch your literary craft to the next level and with ongoing, peer-to-peer critique and networking opportunities. Thursday at 7 Friday at the Buttonwood, Stacy Phillips and Paul Howard will perform their grammy Award-winning Neo Urban Traditional music at at 8PM. Saturday at 8 The John Funkhouser Trio will be playing all original music and sunday at 4 it’s an afternoon Double Bill featuring EMILY HURD / ORICE JENKINS. Tonight at Cafe Nine in New Haven, Felicious performs with featured violinist Jerald Daemyon. Wedensday, HADOUKEN Presents Local Bang-A-Rang Series for a night of metal, mayhem, parodies and snacks.Thursday Dex Romweber Duo plays psycho-surf-rockabilly-garage-punk with guests ORBO & The Longshots, a rock&roll/americana band from Norway.
Friday at Happy Hour, Christina Santore plays cover songs on banjo and at 9, Connecticut’s premiere women’s flat track roller derby league comes to the Cafe, and Bands and DJs will entertain. All proceeds go directly to Ct roller girlsleague expenses.

Now Here’s what’s going on in the world of cinema in central connecticut:

at Cinestudio, the Trinity College Cinema in Hartford, tonight through thursday is Pina, a Wim Wenders documentary of Pina Bausch’s dance company perform her works on the stage, and then follow as they dance on city streets, on trams, and in fields, mixing their glorious art with the pulse of everyday life. Friday through the weekend, catch the academy award winner Hugo, an animated film about is a 12-year-old orphan who secretly lives in a Paris  railway station and befriends a mysterious toymaker, who turns out to be a forgotten pioneer of filmmaking, Georges Méliès.

This weekend at Real Art Ways in Hartford, catch animated film Chico and Rita, about two talented musicians who venture from Havana to New York, Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas to unite in music and love.

at 6pm Free Speech Radio News From The Pacifica Network is an independently produced half hour daily national and international radio news program focusing on peace and social justice issues in the US and around the world.

From 6:30-8pm its Total Praise with Minister Latrecia presenting a diverse and inspirational blend of contemporary Christian gospel music to uplift your spirit! Get your Praise on!

at 8pm it’s Evening Jazz with Bill Denert – Where hearing is the best experience.  Join Bill for a broad range of swing, be-bop, and avant garde as well as a sprinkling of new releases.

at 9:30 tune in for Bridging the Gap with JBrent – a show that explores how music has changed forms through the years, and the links that tie together seemingly disparate genres such as blues and rap, or funk and Krautrock.

Alphabet Soup with DJ Blaze at 10:30 is an anti-genre, request-based show where the hosts randomly select a letter from the alphabet, and play bands or artists whose names start with that letter.

at 11:30pm all aboard for Flight 881 with Captain Q – which is not your Grandma’s World Music Show! Strap in your seatbelts, put out that cigarette, and open up that small packet of honey roasted peanuts! Each week Flight 881 is going to a new country to check out what music scenes are happening with a focus on contemporary world music, including Bhagra from India, Afro-Beat, and Brazillian funk.

At 1am Songs Without Words with Jacob Feder  – is an eclectic assortment of instrumental music from all genres and generations.

from 2:00-3:00am Undercover with DJ Becca who says The best covers take original tracks and transform them into their own creations. Bridging genres, musical styles, and time, Undercover explores the concept of inspiration through imitation. Sometimes they surpass the original, sometimes they miss the mark – it’s your call.

at 3am, Sunspot loops with Rick Reaction invites you to explore what’s new in the world and not get bogged down with hype.
