Good evening, it’s Tuesday, February 19th and this is the Jive at Five – WESU’s Daily community calendar and rundown of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. Here’s a run sown of some of what’s scheduled to happen in the community this week.

Over at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, tonight is Laughter Yoga with Clare, a free and fun stress-reliever, starting at 7 p.m.  Wednesday night at 7, the Buddhist film “My Reincarnation” will be shown. Filmed over 20 years by acclaimed documentarian Jennifer Fox, “My Reincarnation” chronicles a Tibetan Buddhist Master’s rise to greatness as a Buddhist teacher in the West, as his son breaks away to embrace the modern world. Thursday evening at the Buttonwood Tree, Alex Vans and the Hide Away performs indie rock at 8. Friday at 8, it’s Ari and Mia Friedman, a sister duet harmonizing as they explore the traditions of Southern Appalachia and Northeastern fiddle music. On Saturday, community yoga is offered at the Buttonwood Tree beginning at 8:45. Also on Saturday at the Buttonwood, it’s An Afternoon with Liela Marie Fuller, a poet whose first collection has been called an emotional roller coaster ride from joy and happiness to sadness and pain.  Then Saturday night at 8, enjoy Federico Ughi’s music at the Buttonwood. His music infuses the New York avant garde sound with a sense of melody inspired by the Italian classical and folk traditions of his childhood in Rome. Then Sunday, and every Sunday, Food Not Bombs shares food at 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood. All are welcome to enjoy a free vegetarian meal. Down in New Haven at Toad’s Place tonight is Dada, the 20th anniversary tour. Wednesday brings Big Gigantic, with Kill Paris and Dirty Bunny, followed by the weekly EDM Night. Friday at Toad’s, it’s the award-winning Shakedown, playing the Dead and beyond. Also playing are Down-Stairs Sally and Eggy & the Delegates. Then Friday, Afton Presents in Lilly’s Pad: Paragon; Molly Maine; Boltcutter; Fortune’s Gale; and Bob Raymond and Guests. Details at www.toadsplace.com.

Also in New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight brings The Tet Offensive; with Sander Hicks. Wednesday, it’s Perhaps, w Wess Meets West and Ovlov. Thursday at 8, Rosie Ledet and the Zydeco Playboys play at Café Nine. Friday from 5 to 7, it’s the Friday Happy Hour , with Byl Cote, followed by TACO HUT RECORDS & PROMOTION Presents Jose’s 25th Birthday Bash featuring Party Horse; Milksop:Unsung; and You Scream, I Scream. Saturday, it’s the Saturday Afternoon Jazz Jam, with host George Baker at Café Nine, followed at 8 by CT.com Royal Thunder; with Ancient Wisdom; Bedroom Rehab Corporation; and Stone Titan. Sunday, from 4 to 7, it’s the Bluegrass Jam at Café Nine, hosted by Stacy Phillips. That’s followed at 7 by the Sunday After Supper Jam, with host Dom Zullo and the Café Nine All Stars. Up in Hartford at Blackeyed Sally’s, tonight at 8 at Sally’s, it’s Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra, an 18 piece big band. On Wednesday, it’s the Blues Jam with John Fries; this is one of the longest running open blues jams in New England. Thursday at 8 brings Little Ugly with Paper Hill Casket Company to Blackeyed Sally’s. Then Friday, John Fries is back, this time with his trio The Heat and special guest Matt Zeiner. At Wesleyan University on Wednesday at 8 p.m., author Siddhartha Deb will read from his recent work at Russell House, 350 High Street. Siddhartha Deb is the author of the novels The Point of Return and An Outline of the Republic. On Thursday at 7 p.m. at Wesleyan’s Memorial Chapel, 221 High Street, a senior music recital—“Music of the Night Chorus”—will be presented by Brian Goodell. On Saturday at 7:30, the Greater Middletown Concert Association presents “Maria de Buenos Aires,” an opera by the Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla, including tango dance pieces, at the MHS Performing Arts Center, 200 LaRosa Lane (off Newfield Street) in Middletown. Now here’s a rundown of cinema – plus an event AT a cinema– off the beaten track, here in Central Connecticut:

At Real Art Ways in Hartford, Oscar-nominated short films, both animated and live-action, make up the bulk of the schedule through Wednesday.  Thursday, and every third Thursday, it’s the Creative Cocktail Hour, from 6 to 10 p.m., when creative people come together for conversation, art and music. The music will be by DJ Occult 69. Friday through next Thursday brings the film “Searching for Sugar Man,” nominated for an Oscar for best documentary feature, to Real Art Ways. Also on Friday: Michelle Ellsworth’s “Preparations for the Obsolescence of the Y Chromosome.” More can be found online at realartways.org.

At Cinestudio, Trinity College’s cinema, tonight’s film is “This Must be the Place,” with Sean Penn. Then Wednesday through Saturday, it’s “Skyfall,” nominated for five Academy Awards. From 6:00-6:30 is Free Speech News from the Pacifica Newtork.
6:30-8:00 is Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill, An eclectic selection of Americana, country, folk, folk-rock, bluegrass, acoustic, blues, Celtic, old-time, singer-songwriter and other music that has a roots influence.That is followed by the Voice of The City with J Cherry, with live local Connecticut music.
 9-10:30pm is Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat, whose got a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers.
10:30-11:30 is Record Roulette with Avery, playing some risky vynl. Then Hardly Strictly Bluegrass with DJ Sleepy Girl from 11:30-12:30. Followed by Six Degrees Of David Bowie with Monica Kornis, connecting various artists to David Bowie in six steps or less we will observe his ubiquitous influence on modern music, as well as explore his many collaborations and influences.
1:30-2:30am is Declan MacManus: International Art Thief with DJs Moe and Jeffrey, bringing you a different part of Costello’s vivifying and varying musical persona.
2:30-3am is Romancipation with Dr. Love and DJ Smooth. This is emancipation from the rules of romance. Hear tips on dating, love, and all of the above, and some songs to go with them
And 3-4am is Search and Recover with DJ Cheshire Cat. Search and Recover scours the world of music to find as many versions of a single song as possible. Join the exploration of the modern musical standards!
