Here’s a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area:

This Sunday from 11 – 4 at Wesleyan University’s Beckham Hall, it’s WESU’s spring community record fair and sale! There will be dozens of dealers selling bazillions of Records, CDs, and Tapes from All Genres of Music, plus food truck vendors and Live WESU DJ sets all day!

Saturday at 8 at the BUTTONWOOD TREE on Main Street, Harpeth Rising performs original string music that’s been hailed as an Americana sensation. Sunday, Poetry Potluck is an opportunity for people who enjoy poetry to get together to share and discuss their favorite works at 4. Through Sunday, view the talents of seniors in the Wesleyan Art Studio Program during the 3rd week of thesis exhibitions. Featuring Cordelia Blanchard, Luke Erickson, Pok Yan Ho, Aaron Eidman, and Harry Hanson, in the Ezra and Cecile Zilkha Gallery.

Tonight at 7pm at the Crowell Concert hall, there will be a senior music recital by Sean Curtice entitled “Sean Curtice and Composers of 18th-Century Music.” Admission is free and open to the public.


Saturday, Wesleyan University Center for the Arts presents Argentine composer and pianist Fernando Otero, who evokes the tango sounds of Buenos Aires with his rhythmically vibrant works at 8pm at the Crowell Concert Hall. There will be a pre-concert talk at 7:15pm.

Saturday at 2pm, Wesleyan University presents a piano recital featuring the winner and finalists of The Elizabeth Verveer Tishler Piano Competition in the Russell House. Admission is free of charge. Students in the Opera/Oratorio Ensemble at Wesleyan University perform selections from its repertory under the direction of Priscilla Gale on Sunday at 5pm in Crowell Concert Hall. Vinnie’s Jump & Jive has a Family Dance from 3 to 5p on Saturday at 424 Main St. in Middletown followed by an All Blues All Night dance from 8 to midnight. Visit vinniesjumpandjive.com for details.

This weekend, the Friends of the Library Book Sale returns, from noon to 6 on Friday and Saturday at the Russell Library. Go to russelllibrary.org for more information.

Connecticut’s Jeff Davis and Dan Milner present a special program of Civil War Era songs from the sea, land and homefront at the Branford Folk Music Society on Saturday evening at 8, in the auditorium of the First Congregational Church of Branford. Tonight the Michael Cleary Band will be at their hometown club, The Winchester Cafe on Rt 66 in Portland. This show starts at 8:30.

Friday nights at Michael’s Restaurant & Lounge in Middletown, 139 Main St Ext from 7-9 the Vintage Vox Quartet plays music from the “American” songbook. This includes a wide variety of some of the greatest songs ever written.

Friday nights in East Hampton at 70 Main Street, Higher Grounds Coffee House has their weekly open mic. The show starts at 8p. Every Saturday it’s live and local music.

Saturday, famed cuban soul group Sierra Maestra, featuring members of The Buena Vista Social Club, brings infectious dance music to the Roots Music Hall, and Sunday, singer/songwriter Melissa Ferrick performs. For more info, call 860 724 4444 or go to rootsmusichartford.com

Manic Productions brings “Many Arms and Geoglyphs” to Cafe Nine in New Haven tonight while at BAR in New Haven, Body Language, D. Gookin, and “Universal Remote” perform.  More concert and ticket information can be found at manicproductions.org

Now here’s what’s going on in the world of cinema in central Connecticut:

Tonight at Cinestudio in Hartford, at the early show is the final showing of “The Iron Lady”, Meryl Streep’s  Academy Award winning performance as Britain’s first woman Prime Minister. The late show is Jaws. And Saturday beginning at noon, Cinestudio will show the Lord of The Rings trilogy. Sunday marks the beginning of Cinestudio’s weeklong April In Paris Film festival with a matinee showing of The Passion of Joan of Arc and an evening showing of Belle de Jour. it’s Free Speech Radio News from The Pacifica Network – An independently produced half hour daily national and international radio news program focusing on peace and social justice issues in the US and around the world. FSRN is collectively run by its workers and reporters.

At 6:30 until 7pm, listen in to The Middletown Youth Radio Project – A weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

From 7pm to 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee – Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10pm, we take it
 From the Otherside with 
Rok-A-Dee – The Voice of Hartford, featuring local artists from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Spotlighting Caribbean R & B, Soca and international music.

From 10 until 11:30pm, take in

until 3am – Celebrating conscious hip-hop and its offshoots & influences. Acrobatic emcees and down-tempo poets mix it up over varied oceans of sound.

At 3, to 4am it’s the Hour of Slack from The Church of the SubGenius Radio Ministry with Bob – The compendium of the best and newest from all SubGenius radio & stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, plus the weirdest of the indie audio underground.

Then, we bring you
 Sing Out! 
from 4 to 5am, on a mission to preserve and support the cultural diversity and heritage of all traditional and contemporary folk musics, and to encourage making folk music a part of our everyday lives.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6:00 to 7:00am it’s

 – Traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.
