Here’s a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area:

Tonight  AT THE BUTTONWOOD TREE on Main Street here in Middletown, it’s Joe Flood and the Lost Wandering Blues & Jazz Band at 8pm, and Saturday the Sinan Bakir Jazz Trio takes the Buttonwood stage at 7:30pm. Sunday night, it’s a new Open Mic at the Buttonwood that will be filmed in its entirety to be aired on Comcast TV. Only those who agree to be viewed on TV should perform, and all are welcome. On the campus of Wesleyan University this weekend there are a number of recitals offered. A senior music recital by Nate Mondschein entitled “An Experiment in Poetry and Sound” takes place tonight at 9pm in the World Music Hall. On Saturday a senior music recital by Lana Lana entitled “Piano Sketches of Indonesia” will be performed at 2pm in the Memorial Chapel while later, at 7pm there is a senior music recital by Andrew Chung in Crowell Concert Hall. Tonight at Cafe 9 in New Haven, you can enjoy an evening of original guitar rock featuring three local luminaries. Shellye Valauskas, The Streams, and Spike Priggen. Saturday’s afternoon Jazz Jam will be hosted by the Mike Coppola Trio. Saturday Night Circus Delecti hosts their own 10th Anniversary Bash at the nine featuring music by “They Hate Us” and “DJ Znuh”. Sunday afternoon Cafe 9 hosts Roxy Perry’s Traveling Roadhouse Jam. Find out more at cafenine.com

Tonight at 7:30pm here in Middletown, Oddfellows Playhouse Youth Theater on Washington Street presents “Thank You for Flushing My Head in the Toilet and Other Rarely Used Expressions” info online at www.oddfellows.org

Now here’s a rundown of what’s going on in the world of cinema off the beaten path here in central Connecticut this week.

Tonight, Real Art Ways in Hartford continues a run of “Salt of Life” about an aging  guy  who questions why all of the passion seems to have disappeared from his life. This weekend, Real Art Ways in Hartford is also showing “The Forgiveness of Blood”, telling the story of an Albanian teen whose life is suddenly turned upside-down when his father and uncle become entangled in a land dispute that starts a blood feud. Tonight at 7:30 at Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartford, there will be a showing of Free Willy and  Friday and Saturday, Cinestudio presents The Artist, a silent film shot in luminous black and white, which follows the seismic changes of late 1920s’ Hollywood, as a silent film star falls from grace with the arrival of the talkies. And on Sunday, Cinestudio presents We Need To Talk About Kevin, a disturbing tale told with uncompromising emotionality and great skill. More can be found online at www.cinestudio.org

This month The South Asian Film Series:” Phoolan Devi  and the Roots of Indian Rage”  at Wesleyan’s Center for Film Studies presents films exploring issues around Phoolan Devi, aka the Bandit Queen, a radical activist turned politician who rose to fame in India in the 1970s and was ultimately assassinated in 2001. Saturday at 2pm you can catch “Sholay” one of Bollywood’s greatest action/adventure films on the subject.  A panel discussion will follow the film. All screenings are free and open to the public at Wesleyan’s Cinema.

At 6:30 until 7pm, listen in to The Middletown Youth Radio Project – A weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

From 7pm to 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee – Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

At 1am we go

until 3am – Celebrating conscious hip-hop and its offshoots & influences. Acrobatic emcees and down-tempo poets mix it up over varied oceans of sound.

At 3, to 4am it’s the Hour of Slack from The Church of the SubGenius Radio Ministry with Bob – The compendium of the best and newest from all SubGenius radio & stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, plus the weirdest of the indie audio underground.

Then, we bring you
 Sing Out! 
from 4 to 5am, on a mission to preserve and support the cultural diversity and heritage of all traditional and contemporary folk musics, and to encourage making folk music a part of our everyday lives.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the
