Good evening. It’s Friday, March 30th, and this is the Jive at Five, WESU’s Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. Here’s a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area:

The Coleman Brothers Carnival has opened in Middletown for their 96th annual event. With more than 30 rides and attractions for all ages, the carnival has set up camp at Palmer Field on Bernie O’Rourke Drive. The Carnival will run through Sunday and is located just off of Rt 66 on Bernie O’Rourke Drive.

In the Russell Library’s Hubbard Room Saturday at 2pm, Singer/guitarist Enzo Boscarino offers a musical tour of some of his favorite regions of Italy. For more information on Russell Library events, visit www.russelllibrary.org

Here in Middletown on Saturday, The Buttonwood Tree on Main Street presents Songwriters In the Round featuring Tiff Jimber, Jen Vanderlyn, & Luis Narino. Sunday night, the Buttonwood hosts a fundraiser for St.Vincent dePaul with a night of spoken word and improvisational music. Every Sunday, Food Not Bombs shares food around the 1 pm hour in front of the Buttonwood. All are welcome. There is more information about all of these events at www.buttonwood.org

Trinity College in Hartford holds their 7th International Hip Hop Festival through Saturday. This event features top performances by Hip Hop artists from around the globe plus film screenings, panel discussion, workshops, and competitions, art shows and Break Dancing. Of note is the DMC World Turntablist regional championship from noon -4pm on Saturday, which will showcase CTs best DJs on the “ones and twos” flexing their skills. The Davison Arts Center presents an exhibition of acquired prints “with a lot of help from our friends: 50 years of acquisitions” – celebrating the Friends of the Davison Art Center which has raised funds to purchase more than 900 works of art since its start in 1962. Works are on display from noon to 4pm in the Davison Art Center on the Wesleyan University campus thru May 29.

This week, you can view the talents of the seniors in the Art Studio Program of Wesleyan’s Department of Art and Art History, in the first round of senior thesis exhibitions, featuring Kuan-lin Huang, Elizabeth Chabot, Gil Sunshine, Johnny Tan, Sienna Perro, Xiao You. The exhibit runs through Sunday in the Ezra and Cecile Zilkha Gallery. The gallery is open from noon to 4pm and admission is free.

The Australian dance company Chunky Move, presents the CT premiere of “Connected“, which animates the physical connection between body & machine as dancers construct a kinetic sculpture designed by California-based artist Reuben Margolin. Performances are tonight and Saturday at 8pm in Wesleyan’s CFA Theater.

A senior music recital by Owen Callahan entitled “Music I Find Myself Writing.” is at Wesleyan’s Memorial Chapel at 9 tonight, and is free and open to the public. Information on all of these Wesleyan University events is at wesleyan.edu/cfa

Tonight the Higher Grounds Coffee House at 70 Main St. in East Hampton hosts their weekly open mic. Show starts at 7PM. Every Saturday night there is live local music.

The Good Sponge Sampler Vol. 1 CD Release Party is Saturday night, and virtually every artist on the CD is performing live! John Fries and The Heat, The River God, WESU’s Lauren Agnelli and Dave Rave, Franklin Brothers, Dogbite and more! Starting at 10 am at Brew Bakers on Main St. in Middletown this Sunday, acoustic duet Diane & Dave perform popular American music from the 1930’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and into the 21st Century.

Sunday night in Collinsville at Bridge St. Live, you can catch Red Molly w/ special guest Roosevelt Dime for a night of creative Americana music at 8:00 PM. More online at 41bridgestreet.com

Now here’s what’s going on in the world of cinema in central Connecticut:

Tonight and Saturday at Real Art Ways in Hartford is Salt of Life, about a man questioning why all of the passion seems to have disappeared from his life. Also, All In: The Poker Movie, a film on poker’s renaissance, has a run this weekend. Realartways.org offers film ticket sales, trailers, and show times.

At Cinestudio, Trinity College’s cinema Friday and Saturday, The Adventures Of Tintin brings the cartoon classic to the big screen. Ready to tackle a new quest with his faithful white fox terrier Snowy by his side, Tintin teams up with the tipsy seafarer Captain Haddock to recover the treasure from the sunken ship, the Unicorn. Beginning Sunday Cinestudio shows Albert Nobbs, “A heady mix of sexuality, identity, class politics and romantic self-deception” says Ann Hornaday, of the Washington Post starring Glenn Close and Janet McTeer. And now let’s take a look at tonight’s programming on WESU.

Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05 to 6:00pm it’s  The Brittle Diameter  w/Josh Sharp –  A varied blend of brand new and time honored independent music, presented in a mixtape aesthetic. Continuity and cohesion are the watchwords here.

From 6:00 to 6:30pm  it’s Free Speech Radio News from The Pacifica Network – An independently produced half hour daily national and international radio news program focusing on peace and social justice issues in the US and around the world. FSRN is collectively run by its workers and reporters.

At 6:30 until 7pm, listen in to The Middletown Youth Radio Project – A weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

From 7pm to 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee – Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10pm, we take it  From the Otherside with  Rok-A-Dee – The Voice of Hartford, featuring local artists from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Spotlighting Caribbean R & B, Soca and international music.

From 10 until 11:30pm, take in  the sounds of Rumba en el Patio  with Michael - Classic Salsa for the dancers, Afro-Latin Big Band for the discerning ear. Join us as we adventure through the history of Musica Latina!

At 11:30pm until 1am Saturday it’s  N.E. Tempo with  DJ Berk - Serious turntablism – Dubstep, DnB, techno, ragga jungle, breakbeats mixed live.

At 1am we go  In the Master Bedroom, Under the Bed with  Dope Dave  until 3am – Celebrating conscious hip-hop and its offshoots & influences. Acrobatic emcees and down-tempo poets mix it up over varied oceans of sound.

At 3, to 4am it’s the Hour of Slack from The Church of the SubGenius Radio Ministry with Bob – The compendium of the best and newest from all SubGenius radio & stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, plus the weirdest of the indie audio underground.

Then, we bring you  Sing Out!  from 4 to 5am, on a mission to preserve and support the cultural diversity and heritage of all traditional and contemporary folk musics, and to encourage making folk music a part of our everyday lives.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the  BBC World News  - a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6:00 to 7:00am it’s  the Celtic Café  – Traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

And now that the coffee’s hot enjoy Caffe Italia from 7:00 to 8:00am  with Francesco Fiumara  – A weekly roundup of news, music and memories from Italy.
