Our Favorite Songs (121 – 130)
121. No Good To Cry by The Wildweeds
Year Released: 1967
Released On: Cadet 45 Rpm single
Nominated by Robbie of Homegrown who says: As a sophomore in high school, I heard this song on AM radio and cajoled my Dad into talking me to a Lyman Hall s=dance where I purchased this single. It was Al Anderson’s entrance into the rock world- he later joined NRBQ. before heading to Nashville and becoming a smash country songwriter. His yearly returns to CT are huge draws- always sellouts. This was the first song I played on Homegrown 17 years ago.
122. Like a Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan
Year Released: 1965
Released On: Highway 61 Revisited
Nominated by Bruce from Flushing.
123. B.O.B by Outkast
Year Released: 2000
Released On: Stankonia
Nominated by Asher from Middletown who says: I’ve heard this song almost my whole life. I’ve never once heard a song this consistently amazing, on lyrics, production, music video, etc. A fine-tuned fusion of rock and rap, with witty and pointed lyrics, timely for the warmongering of the US at the time. Outkast remains one of the best to do it, and no one has ever made a song like this.
124. Sweet Jane by The Velvet Underground
Year Released: 1969
Released On: The Velvet Underground
Nominated by Sir Jon of Pint O’ Comics who says: My vote for best rock song of all-time is also my favourite song of all-time. I like all interpretations of the song, from the Gang of Four to the Cowboy Junkies to even Mott the Hoople (sorry, Tony Pioppi), but the original has rarely been surpassed. One day I hope to play it while driving a Stutz Bearcat.
125. Pink + White by Frank Ocean
Year Released: 2016
Released On: Blonde
Nominated by DJ Lukey G of The Guest List who says: This song takes you places you never thought you could go.
126. Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads
Released On: Remain in Light
Nominated by Kara who says: A reminder that this is capital-I It, and all the It there is. Don’t waste it.
127. Tommy’s Party – Audiotree Live Version by Peach Pit
Year Released: 2017
Released On: Peach Pit on Audiotree Live
Nominated by DJ Way of Wes Dissect who says: If I had 5 minutes and 40 seconds left to live, this is hands down the song I would listen to. The lyrics have a way of being specific yet familiar, and the guitar solo is what dreams are made of. The fact that this is a live recording is just the cherry on top.
128. Whispering Bells by The Dell-Vikings
Year Released: 1957
Released On: Dot
Nominated by Tom.
129. Way of the World by Cheap Trick
Year Released: 1979
Released On: Dream Police
Nominated by Charlie from Petaluma who says: Favorite song from the first band I liked on my own in 1979 after my brother and I used to fight over who liked the band KISS better. Still making great albums to this very day.
130. Hands Down by The Greeting Committee
Year Released: 2015
Released On: It’s Not All That Bad
Nominated by DJ Starling of Bump in the Night who says: This is the first Greeting Committee song I ever heard, and is always a blast to scream the lyrics to.
