It’s Friday, June 15th, and this is the Jive at Five, WESU’s Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. Here’s a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area:
Tonight, The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown welcomes Amandla, an original roots reggae ensemble featuring five internationally renowned reggae artists. Saturday is June 16 and that is “Bloomsday”, the day in the life that is “Ulysses”. The Buttonwood Tree has a long-standing tradition of celebrating James Joyce’s literary legacy. This year’s event is again hosted by Abigail Reynolds and features live music by Full Gael followed by an Open Mic.
Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of The Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. All are welcome to enjoy the meal and help prepare the food at the First Church on Court Street at 11:30 am.
Later at 4pm on Sunday, the monthly Poetry Potluck gathering offers an opportunity for people who enjoy poetry to get together to share and discuss their favorite works. This isn’t an open mike. More information about all Buttonwood events can be found at buttonwood.org or by calling 860.347.4957
Down in New Haven tonight at Café Nine, Sarah Lou Richards and Mike Clifford are in for an early set of Nashville twang at 6:30. Later at 9:30 Christina Harris returns to New Haven and co-headlines a night of piano driven pop. Café Nine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam will be hosted by Tony Dioguardi and Friends. Saturday Night Babement, an all girl Pavement cover band; Dead Wives; and Two Inch Astronaut make for a Garage post punk showcase. More online at www.cafenine.com
Tonight, Infinity Hall in Norfolk presents an evening of music with Robert Randolph and The Family Band. Saturday Night Mathew Sweet brings his “Girlfriend” tour to Infinity Hall. Sunday night Donna The Buffalo take the stage. More can be found at infinityhall.com

Tonight in East Hampton at the Higher Grounds Coffee House at 70 Main Street, it’s the weekly open mic. Show starts at 8PM. Every Saturday it’s a live local music at Higher Grounds.
Tonight The Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook presents Ollabelle, a New York based folk-roots-rock band that began playing gospel tunes in Manhattan’s Lower East Side following 9/11. More information can be found at thekate.org or by calling 860-388-3286.
Saturday night at the Outer Space in Hamden you can catch Jug band revivalists Washboard Slim and the Blue Lights in a double bill with Americana sweethearts, Amalgamated Muck (including the Grammy-nominated Lauren Agnelli), for a night of local roots music.
Saturday morning at 11am you are invited to join the Russell Library Knitters,

Now here’s a quick rundown of cinema off the beaten path here in central CT this week.
Tonight Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartford presents an incredible restoration of Marcel Carné’s film Les Enfants du Paradis (Children of Paradise) which has been called by some, the greatest of all French movies. Show schedules and descriptions can be found online at cinestudio.org
Real Art Ways in Hartford is showing “Pink Ribbons, Inc.” a feature documentary that shows how the devastating reality of breast cancer, which marketing experts have labeled a “dream cause,” becomes obfuscated by a shiny, pink story of success.
Tonight Real Art Ways begins a run of “Peace, Love and Misunderstanding” starring Jane Fonda. And Real Art Ways has extended its run of Marley, capturing the life of reggae great Bob Marley, continuing through Saturday. Tickets, times, and more at www.realartways.org
