Good evening, it’s Monday, July 30th. This is the Jive at Five, WESU’s Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. Here in Middletown Mondays through Thursdays from 10am-noon during July and August, Stacey Stroka leads The Buttonwood Tree’s Open Arts & Crafts program. Everyone is welcome!
Every Monday night, J-CHERRY hosts the ANYTHING GOES!” OPEN MIC AT THE BUTTONWOOD TREE. Signups beginning at 7:30pm and Performances starting at 8:00.
Every first Thursday of the month there’s an open mic with Bob Gotta, with sign ups starting at 6:30pm.
Friday night, CT native Randy Burns will be playing with The Brothers Radcliffe at the Buttonwood Tree at 8pm.
Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. All are welcome and invited to help prepare food at the First Church on 190 Court Street at 11:30 am.

Tonight and every Monday night down in New Haven, Rohn Lawrence and Friends make smooth jazz on the lily pad stage. But before they hit the stage, indie folk-pop band The Head and the Heart will be taking the stage at 8pm.Wednesday is always the weekly dubstep dance party, and Thursday brings alternative rock band Our Lady Peace to the main stage at 9pm. Friday night rock out with Rock This Wild World, featuring Blacktop Forest, Tomorrow Just Started, The Restless and many more. Also down in New Haven tonight at Cafe Nine, The Elm City Americana Series returns featuring Milksop: Unsung. Tomorrow night Café Nine will have an indie showcase including Ceschi, Dark Time Sunshine and Crushcon 7. Wednesday night Hadoukan presents a local metal showcase starting at 9pm. Thursday brings roots group Blue Pontiac to the stage, and Friday Night will see Detroit punk band Tyvek along with the Frustrations. • Café nine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam will be hosted by the Mike Coppola Trio this week. Saturday Night there will be a Luau Variety Show, and Sunday Chain and the Gang along with Human Pontiac will be taking the stage. More online at www.cafenine.com
The Middletown Commission on the Arts present their annual Summer Sounds concert series on the City’s South Green (Union Park) on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer. Tomorrow night features the Kenn Morr Band. More information at arts2go.org.
Also on Tuesday, Klekolo World Coffee is bringing back a weekly poetry night hosted by Evan Okun. This will be every Tuesday from 6-8pm.
The Hartford Jazz Society brings live jazz every Monday night to Bushnell Park followed by a jam session at Blackeyed Sallys. Starts at 6 pm.
On Tuesday nights in Hartford, you can catch Mike Palin’s “Other orchestra” an 18 piece big band live on stage at Black-eyed Sally’s. Every Wednesday night Sally’s hosts one of the longest running open blues jams in New England! This Saturday there will be a FREE family friendly one-day Festival of Caribbean Food, Music, Games and Traditions at the Riverfront Plaza in Downtown Hartford. ARTFARM presents Shakespeare Everywhere! The Compleate Work this Sunday, August 5th at 5pm in the Cedar Grove at Middlesex Community College in Middletown. The event, hosted by Chion Wolf, is the culmination of a month-long series of guerilla Shakespeare performances. Shakespeare scenes, monologs and songs plus live music and stories. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy a picnic in the beautiful grove overlooking the Connecticut River Valley.

‘Tis the season for farmers’ markets and here’s a few in our area:
The Durham Farmers’ Market is open every Thursday on the Town Green on Main St, from 3 to 6:30 pm, through September. The longstanding Middletown Farmers’ market at the South Green is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm through October. The Middletown North End Farmers Market is now open 10 am to 2 pm every Friday and is located at the corner of Liberty and Main Streets in Middletown.
