Good evening, it’s Tuesday, July 31st. This is the Jive at Five, WESU’s Daily community calendar and run-down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. I’m Maria Johnson. Here in Middletown Mondays through Thursdays from 10am-noon during August, Stacey Stroka leads The Buttonwood Tree’s Open Arts & Crafts program. Everyone is welcome!
Every first Thursday of the month there’s an open mic with Bob Gotta, with sign ups starting at 6:30pm.
Friday night, CT native Randy Burns will be playing with The Brothers Radcliffe at the Buttonwood Tree at 8pm.
Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. All are welcome and invited to help prepare food at the First Church on 190 Court Street at 11:30 am.

Tomorrow night down in New Haven is always the weekly dubstep dance party at Toad’s Place, and Thursday brings the alternative rock band Our Lady Peace to the main stage at 9pm. Friday night rock out with Rock This Wild World, featuring Blacktop Forest, Tomorrow Just Started, The Restless and many more. Saturday night Toads hosts the Wu Block Tour featuring Ghostface Killah and Sheek Louch. More online at www.toadsplace.com
Also down in New Haven tonight Café Nine will have an indie showcase including Ceschi, Dark Time Sunshine and Crushcon 7. Tomorrow night Hadoukan presents a local metal showcase starting at 9pm. Thursday brings roots group Blue Pontiac to the stage, and Friday Night will see Detroit punk band Tyvek along with the Frustrations. • Café N ine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam will be hosted by the Mike Coppola Trio this week. Saturday Night there will be a Luau Variety Show, and Sunday Chain and the Gang along with Human Pontiac will be taking the stage. More online at www.cafenine.com
The Middletown Commission on the Arts present its annual Summer Sounds concert series on the City’s South Green (Union Park) tonight and on upcoming Tuesday evenings throughout the summer. Tonight features the Kenn Morr Band. More information at arts2go.org.
Also tonight, Klekolo World Coffee is bringing back a weekly poetry night hosted by Evan Okun. This will be every Tuesday from 6-8pm.
Tonight and on upcoming Tuesday nights in Hartford, you can catch Mike Palin’s “Other orchestra” an 18-piece big band live on stage at Black-eyed Sally’s. Tomorrow and every Wednesday night, Sally’s hosts one of the longest running open blues jams in New England! On Friday night singer-songwriters Peter Karp and Sue Foley will take the stage at Sally’s, followed by Mike Law and the Playboys on Saturday night. More at www.blackeyedsallys.com
On Friday, Aug. 3rd, the Middletown Commission on the Arts and Oddfellows Playhouse present the 24th Annual Children’s Circus of Science. The talented young performers will bounce around like molecules in an atom, explore the elements of fire, earth, air and water, and of course there will be a mad scientist or two. The circus will explore a range of scientific subjects all the way from the dinosaurs and marine biology to string theory. Famous scientists — or famous-scientist clowns — be also appear. The circus will begin at 5 p.m. at Macdonough School at 66 Spring St., Middletown.
This Saturday there will be a FREE family friendly one-day Festival of Caribbean Food, Music, Games and Traditions at the Riverfront Plaza in Downtown Hartford. Live entertainment will include Leroy Sibbles, Calypso Rose, Anthem, the St. Lucia Folk Singers, Orquestra Espada, Junior Holt, Toussaint Liberator, Don Minot and many more. more information at tastct.org

ARTFARM presents Shakespeare Everywhere! The Compleate Work this Sunday, August 5th at 5pm in the Cedar Grove at Middlesex Community College in Middletown. The event, hosted by Chion Wolf, is the culmination of a month-long series of guerilla Shakespeare performances. Shakespeare scenes, monologs and songs plus live music and stories. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy a picnic in the beautiful grove overlooking the Connecticut River Valley.

Speaking of farms, ‘tis the season for farmers’ markets and here’s a few in our area:
The Durham Farmers’ Market is open every Thursday on the Town Green on Main St, from 3 to 6:30 pm, through September. The longstanding Middletown Farmers’ market at the South Green is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm through October. The Middletown North End Farmers Market is now open 10 am to 2 pm every Friday and is located at the corner of Liberty and Main Streets in Middletown.

Tonight, Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartford, will be finishing its run of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Opening tomorrow and running through Next Tuesday, Cinestudio will be presenting the 1977 classic Woody Allen movie, Annie Hall. Then, from 6-6:30, it’s Free Speech Radio News From The Pacifica Network, your daily dose of alternative international news and reporting from the Pacifica Network, followed by J-Cherry and The Voice of the City from 6:30 to 8, featuring live and local Connecticut arts and music at it s best.
Then, from 8-10pm, it’s Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill, an eclectic selection of Americana, country, folk, folk-rock, bluegrass, acoustic, blues, Celtic, old-time, singer-songwriter and other music that has a roots influence.
From 10pm-Midnight, stay tuned for Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat. He’s got a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.
Then, from Midnight – 1:30 am, it’s Back From Baltimore with Hannah Malloy, bringing you new and old psychedelic, indie, rock, folk, alternative, lo-fi music and at least a few tunes from Baltimore’s music scene.
From 1:30-2:30am, stay tuned for Random Access Music – with DJ Cheshire Cat, a suicide shuffle of songs and sounds.
That’s followed by The Graveyard with DJ Otto Nation, an eclectic mix of music from the WESU collection of new releases.
And then the BBC World News Service kicks on at 4AM and we begin tomorrow’s broadcast at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
