Here’s a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area:

At The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, throughout the month of December, photos by WESU’s own dj Bill Revill will be exhibited. Saturday brings Isra-Alien’s CD Release Tour to The Buttonwood Tree. Then Sunday, and every Sunday in front of the Buttonwood, Food Not Bombs shares food. You’re invited to help prepare the vegetarian meal at the First Church on 190 Court Street at 11:30 am. Tonight, as part of Wesleyan’s Music & Public Life Series, Richard Kostelanetz, noted literary artist and author of the first biography of John Cage, will discuss the social dimension of Cage’s work. That will be followed by The Wesleyan University Orchestra’s performance, in Crowell Concert Hall, of John Cage’s 1973 work “Etcetera,”  which was commissioned by Wesleyan for the inauguration of the Center for the Arts. This will be followed by a performance of “HPSCHD” by the Wesleyan New Music Alliance in Fayerweather Beckham Hall.

In conjunction with the centennial of Cage’s birth, the university’s Special Collections & Archives at Olin Library has put up “John Cage Writes,” an exhibit of notebooks, manuscripts and photographs from the John Cage Papers, focusing on his literary works. The show also features artists’ books influenced by Cage.
Tonight at the CFA Theater, there will be a performance of the Winter Dance Concert: Impulse. Saturday at 8 p.m., in Crowell Concert Hall, the celebration of John Cage continues with a performance of his “Song Books,” sponsored by the university’s Music & Public Life series. At the First Church of Christ, 190 Court Street in Middletown, the Diversion presents two comedy improv shows, Hartford’s Sea Tea Improv, and Middletown’s Ben Topher and Friends, performing at 7:30 p.m tonight. Reservations are suggested. Go to thediversion.com for details.

Tonight, at Wesleyan Potters Gallery Shop on South Main St. in Middletown, Kaia Pazdersky, the guitarist and lead female vocalist for the group Little Ugly, will perform at the pottery’s Cafe Night.

Also tonight, the Greater Middletown Concert Association celebrates its 45th anniversary year with a musical gala at the Wadsworth Mansion at the Long Hill Estate  in Middletown. This fund-raising occasion will feature live musical entertainment, a buffet dinner and a silent auction. For details, call Marcia at 860-347-2035 or Gerry at 860-347-5360.

Tonght and Saturday at 7:30pm, Oddfellows Playhouse’s Teen Rep Company presents “A Civil War Christmas: An American Musical Celebration” at 128 Washington St. Visit oddfellowsplayhouse.org

The Vintage Vox Quartet will be performing Saturday and including a special winter songs set at Michael’s Restaurant & Lounge, 139 Main St. Extension from 6 to 10pm. Call Michael’s for directions if you’re unclear of their location, 860.343.3480.

The Middletown Symphonic Band will be performing its annual holiday concert on Sunday at the South Congregational Church, 9 Pleasant St., beginning at 2 PM. Admission is free. And, at 4pm, the Annual Candlelight Christmas Concert at First Church on Court St. features the Senior Choir, Celebration Singers, Heart in Hand Bell Choir, Christmas Poems, and Carol Singing. For more information call 860-346-6657 x11.


Saturday, at Central Connecticut State University, an event titled “An Injury to One is an Injury to All: A Conference in Defense of Civil Liberties and to End Indefinite Detention” will be presented. Featuring journalists, activists and scholars from throughout the region, the conference is meant to be a step toward building a movement to defend those targeted for their speech, political activity, race, religion or nation of origin, and to protect basic civil freedoms. For information, contact Dan by calling 860-985-4576 or emailing him at

Now let’s take a look at cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

At Real Art Ways in Hartford tonight they’re showing The Flat, and the Valtari Film Experiment featuring music of Sigur Ros. Saturday, the late show brings a return of The Room. This and lots more can be found at realartways.org.

At Cinestudio, Trinity College’s cinema, running through Saturday, it’s “The Perks of being a Wallflower”. Friday also brings The Dark Crystal. On Sunday, “Different from the Others”, with live musical accompaniment, is the matinee. The evening show is Roman Polanski’s TESS in 4K. For the next half hour, until 7pm you have the Middletown Youth Radio Project – A weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

At 7, until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee – Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10pm, we take it
 From the Otherside with 
Rok-A-Dee – The Voice of Hartford, including local artists from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He also features upcoming artists performing Caribbean R & B, Soca and international music.

From 10 until Midnight, take in

from 4 to 5am, on a mission to preserve and support the cultural diversity and heritage of all traditional and contemporary folk musics, and to encourage making folk music a part of our everyday lives.
