Good evening, it’s Monday, Dec. 17th. This is the Jive at Five – WESU’s Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community  programming week nights and weekends. Here’s a brief rundown of some of the cultural and entertaining events happening in our area this week:

On Monday evenings, The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown presents the weekly Anything Goes Open Mic hosted by J-Cherry (who also produces a Tuesday night radio program, Voice of the City, here in WESU).

Tomorrow evening, there’s a free Laughter Yoga session with Mylene at the buttonwood.


Wednesday at the Buttonwood, Deni hosts a free night of Karaoke.  Friday night, The Buttonwood Tree welcomes Joe Flood back to the stage for a double bill with George Breakfast for an evening of American music called A Window Shoppers X-Mas.


Saturday brings The Annual staged reading of Dylan Thomas’ “A Child’s Christmas in Wales”  performed live by Peter Loffredo accompanied by Eric Esposito with two Shows at 3:00 and 7:00 pm.  Admission by donations plus a non-perishable food item for The Amazing Grace Pantry.


Saturday evening’s appearance by Jen Hill at The Buttonwood has been postponed.  

Each Sunday, Food Not Bombs shares food in front of the Buttonwood Tree.  You’re invited to help prepare them prepare their vegetarian meal at the First Church on Court Street at 11:30 am.


Throughout December, you can catch a photography exhibit by none other than WESU’s own DJ Bill Revill, host of our Tuesday evening Folks music show, the Acoustic Blender will be exhibited. It’s an eclectic selection of subjects that includes musicians, landscapes, seascapes, local agricultural fairs and more. At Café Nine in New Haven tonight, THE FISTFUL OF JOKES MONTHLY COMEDY SERIES begins at 7:30.The ELM CITY AMERICANA SERIES begins at 8pm tonight and features Sub Verso, Pools Are Nice, and Milksop:Unsung.  Tomorrow at Cafe Nine, Ports of Spain hosts an album fundraiserfeaturing Wess Meets West,  Ovlov,  and Head With Wings. Thursday night at Café Nine BURLESQUE-A-PADESpresents “HOLIDAY INN”: A rocking holiday burlesque spectacular direct from NYC.

Friday, FAKE FOUR Presents: Ceschi & Anonymous Inc. for an evening of  live progressive instrumental hip hop / electronic music. Saturday’s Afternoon Jazz Jam is hosted by George Baker this week.  Saturday night Café Nine presents Rocking around the Beehive Tree with Christine Ohlman and Rebel Montez w/ special guests The MIghty Soul Drivers. SUNDAY evening Café nine presents the JEWMONGOUS – Holiday Comedy Songfest .  More online found at www.cafenine.com

Up in Hartford at Blackeyed Sally’s tonight, it’s their weekly Jazz Monday event. Tomorrow brings Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra, an 18-piece band, to Sally’s stage for their weekly engagement.
Wednesday, it’s Black eyed Sally’s longstanding Blues Jam session hosted with BRANDT TAYLOR this week. Thursday brings Hartford native Steve Balkun’s Blues Band to Sally’s. The Colby’s Xmas Stocking Stuffer takes the Sally’s stage for an evening of Louisiana spiced music.

The North End Action Team invites you to celebrate the Season in song with your friends and neighbors in the North End of Middletown tomorrow/ Tuesday, evening at 7pm.  NEAT’s Community Music Initiative is holding a Community Sing at The MAC650 Gallery on Main Street.  This is a *Free Event* with refreshments for Carolers provided. At the First Church of Christ on Court Street in Middletown, on Wednesday nights at 7pm, there’s an ongoing Scottish country dance class for all levels of experience. Call 860-347-0278 for more information.

Down in New Haven, Wednesday brings their weekly Electronic Dance Music Night. Friday brings the return of “Dirty” John Valby’s XXX-Mas show. Saturday night brings Kung Fu’s Christmas Spectacular featuring Break Science, Viral sound, and connection.  This is event is also a Toy drive for needy kids.

On the lily pad stage at Toad’s Saturday night Afton presents over 10 local bands. Sunday night you can catch Steady habits, Wess Meets West, and The Royal Swindle on the Lily pad Stage.  More information about all Toad’s shows can be found at www.toadsplace.com

Thursday night here in Middletown, The Russell Library presents the writing workshop: “We Were There: Writing Your Military Experiences” under the direction of author Elisabeth Petry . This series invites veterans to share their stories in their own voices Thursdays – through Dec 27 at 7pmin Meeting Room 2 www.russelllibrary.org

On the third Thursday of every month, creative people come together for conversation, art and music at Real Art Way’s Creative Cocktail hour in Hartford. This month’s offers a Silent Disco party where the crowd dances to DJ that plays through individual wireless headphones.

Now Here’s a rundown of cinema off the beaten path here in Central Connecticut:

At Real Art Ways in Hartford through Wednesday night you can catch “The Flat”, “a film that begins as a family quest but evolves into a gripping study of know-don’t-tell reticence and the umbilical tie of a lost homeland.”   


Also through Wednesday, Real Art Ways is also showing “The Waiting Room”a character-driven documentary film that uses extraordinary access to go behind the doors of an American public hospital struggling to care for a community of largely uninsured patients. Tonight’s screening will be followed by a panel discussion about health care. There will be no films shown Thursday night. Friday Real Art Ways opens a run of “In the Family” a drama about an adopted child caught in a custody battle after one of his fathers dies unexpectedly.  Saturday brings Real Art Ways shows Best of NY Int’l Children’s Film Festival Kid Flix Mix 2012 on the screen at 2pm offering a colorful collection of short films from around the world, suited for audiences, ages 4 to 8. Through Friday, Cinestudio, Trinity College’s cinema, is now showing Cloud Atlas the film adaptation of a book by British author David Mitchell wherein six interwoven stories, featuring a 19th century bisexual musician in Belgium, and a fast-food worker of the totalitarian future are interweaved. Now here’s a rundown of tonight’s programming on WESU.

Right after the Jive At Five,it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry, a well-rounded jazz show.

At 6pm each week night, Free Speech Radio News From The Pacifica Network provided an evening dose of alternative international news and reporting.

At 630 tonight Life is a Killer with Johnny Analog moves through the blues Diaspora featuring front porch country blues and big city electric blues to jazz, R&B and soul.

at 8pm on the Rumpus Room, Lord Lewis presents his Annual Christmas showcase for the best in vintage and contemporary heavy funk, soul, club jazz, reggae, ska, afro and latin dancefloor grooves with a holiday flavor.

At 9:30 it’s a special 3 hour winter edition of Attention Deficit Disk Jockey with Lee, where you can hear
The music of yesterday’s future, today.

From 12:30-2:30am you can catch a refreshing mix of holiday tunes  you are not likely to hear elsewhere thanks to DJ Otto NAtion

at 2:30 am Maximum Rock and Roll Radio features the best DIY punk, garage rock and hardcore from the astounding, ever-growing Maximum Rock n roll record collection.

at 3:30am DJ Vegetable Reads Missed Connections. You’ve lost someone. Let’s find them.

The BBC World News   begins at 4am and we begin tomorrow’s programming at 5am with Morning Edition from National Public Radio.
