This is the Jive at Five – WESU’s Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. Here’s a brief rundown of some of the cultural and entertaining events happening in our area this week:

Tonight here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree welcomes Joe Flood back to the stage for a double bill with George Breakfast for an evening of American music called A Window Shoppers X-Mas. Saturday brings The annual staged reading of Dylan Thomas’ “A Child’s Christmas in Wales”  performed live by Peter Loffredo accompanied by Eric Esposito with two shows, at 3:00 and 7:00 pm.  Admission is by donation plus a non-perishable food item for The Amazing Grace Pantry.  Saturday evening’s appearance by Jen Allen at The Buttonwood has been postponed until sometime in 2013. Each Sunday, Food Not Bombs shares food in front of The Buttonwood Tree.  You’re invited to help them prepare their vegetarian meal at the First Church on Court Street at 11:30 am. And, throughout December, you can catch a photography exhibit by WESU DJ Bill Revill. You can always find out more about Buttonwood Tree events at www.buttonwood.org 


Saturday night at 8pm, The Canoe Club at Harbor Park in Middletown presents an evening of live music with The Marksmen. And on Sunday The Three of Us perform jazz for dancing and listening beginning at 5pm. To learn more call 860-347-9999 or visit

Sam The Messiah Man on WESU fm – a recitation by Roy Lisker of the legend of Sam the violinist. The story has become a local classic over the last decade. It has been recited every Christmas since 1996 at the Russell Library, The Buttonwood Tree, WESU, the Atticus Bookstore and other places. The time is 9 PM, Sunday on The Psychedelicatessen Show with Rick on WESU 88.1 fm. Listen live over the internet or the airwaves.


Tonight, at Café Nine in New Haven FAKE FOUR Presents: Ceschi & Anonymous Inc. for an evening of live progressive instrumental hip hop / electronic music. Saturday’s Afternoon Jazz Jam is hosted by George Baker this week.  Saturday night Café Nine presents Rocking around the Beehive Tree with Christine Ohlman and Rebel Montez w/ special guests The Mighty Soul Drivers. Suday evening Café Nine presents the JEWMONGOUS – Holiday Comedy Songfest.  More can be found cafenine.com

Down at Toad’s Place tonight is the return of “Dirty” John Valby’s XXX-Mas show. Saturday night brings Kung Fu’s Christmas Spectacular featuring Break Science, Viral sound, and connection.  This is event is also a Toy drive for needy kids.
On the lily pad stage at Toad’s Saturday night Afton presents over 10 local bands. Sunday night you can catch Steady Habits, Wess Meets West, and The Royal Swindle on the Lily pad Stage.  More information about all Toad’s shows can be found at www.toadsplace.com

Up in Hartford at Blackeyed Sally’s tonight, The Colby’s Xmas Stocking Stuffer takes the stage for an evening of Louisiana spiced music. Saturday night features XY Eli and Steve Davis as Blues Meets Jazz. More can be found out at blackeyedsallys.com


Now here’s our rundown of cinema off the beaten path here in Central Connecticut:

At Real Art Ways in Hartford tonight they open a run of “In the Family” a drama about an adopted child caught in a custody battle after one of his fathers dies unexpectedly. Saaturday and Sunday Real Art Ways shows Best of NY Int’l Children’s Film Festival Kid Flix Mix 2012 on the screen at 2pm offering a colorful collection of short films from around the world, suited for audiences, ages 4 to 8. Tonight, Cinestudio, Trinity College’s cinema, is showing Cloud Atlas, the film adaptation of a book by British author David Mitchell wherein six interwoven stories, featuring a 19th century bisexual musician in Belgium, and a fast-food worker of the totalitarian future are interweaved. it’s Free Speech Radio News – Your daily dose of alternative international news and reporting from the Pacifica Network.

For the next half hour, until 7pm you have the Middletown Youth Radio Project – A weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

At 7, until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee – Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10pm, we take it

Rok-A-Dee – The Voice of Hartford, including local artists from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He also features upcoming artists performing Caribbean R & B, Soca and international music.

until 3am – Celebrating conscious hip-hop and its offshoots & influences. Acrobatic emcees and down-tempo poets mix it up over varied oceans of sound.

At 3, to 4am it’s the Bassment Beats – the Real Hip-Hop is over here.

from 4 to 5am, on a mission to preserve and support the cultural diversity and heritage of all traditional and contemporary folk musics, and to encourage making folk music a part of our everyday lives.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6:00 to 7:00am it’s
 the Celtic Café
 with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.
