Here’s a run sown of some of what’s scheduled to happen in the community this week. Keep in mind that many venues and business were set back by the unprecedented weather we experienced this week and as such may not be back up and running yet. We suggest you check with venues directly to make sure they are open for business and are back on schedule.
Down at Café Nine in New Haven, tonight, songwriters McDougallSam Perdutatake the stage. Wednesday at the Nine is still listed as TBA on their website but Thursday brings the Lip Gloss Crisis 3rd Annual Valentines Day Show where’ New Haven’s own Dot Mitzvah will be the ringleader at this romantic circus-themed burlesque cabaret! Friday night The Greg Sherrod Band and The New Dirtymake for a night of Rock and Roll at Café nine. Saturday, at 4pm it’s the weekly SATURDAY AFTERNOON JAZZ JAM w/ this week’s host Tony Dioguardi and Friends. Saturday night brings The Daphne Lee Martin celebrating her new release, Moxie alongside Ellison Jackson. Sunday’s SUNDAY-AFTER-SUPPER JAM will be hosted by Dom Zullo and the Cafe Nine All Stars. www.cafenine.com for details.
Up in Hartford at Blackeyed Sally’s, they celebrate Fat Tuesday w/ Rivercity Slim & the Zydeco Hogs. Wednesday it’s the longstanding weekly Blues Jam, hosted by Tommy Whalen this week. Thursday brings Jazz Vocalist Dana Lauren, to the Sally’s stage. Friday, Shaka and the Soul Shakers perform their Louisiana sound along with Two Virgins. George Clinton and parliament Funkadellic return to the Toads Place stage on Thursday night down in New Haven. Friday night THE BLACK SOLIDARITY CONFERENCE AT YALE presents a performance by the Hip Hop Collective, PHONY PPL at Toads Place. Saturday night the CFA Wesleyan University Center for the Arts: “Glass Guignol: The Brother/Sister Play” directed by Lee Breuer, who explores the life and work of Tennessee Williams in this production.
Each Sunday, Food Not Bombs shares food at about 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood. All are welcome to enjoy a free vegetarian meal and to help prepare it beforehand at First Church at on Court Street beforehand at 11:30 am. Sunday after noon at 4pm brings the monthly gathering, Poetry Potluck, an opportunity for people who enjoy poetry to get together to share and discuss their favorite works. At Real Art Ways inHartford, Oscar-nominated short films, both animated and live-action, make up the bulk of the schedule through next Wednesday. www.realartways.org for details.
At Cinestudio, Trinity College’s cinema, tonight you can catch the final showing of “Chasing Ice,” which illustrates the effects of global warming on the coldest parts of our earth. Tomorrow Cinestudio and the new Thinking through Film series present “The Lives of Others”, a film that has been called the best film made on living under a police state. Set in 1984 in the German Democratic Republic. Thursday, Cinestudio kicks off a three day run of the 1942 black and white classic Casablanca starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Sunday Cinestudio kicks off a run of the newest film by Italian director Paolo Sorrentino, This must be the Place” details online at www.cinestudio.org.
After the jive at five is the Wayfaring Stranger with Lily Myers. Then at 6pm each weeknight Free Speech Radio News from the Pacifica Network offers a daily wrap up of international news in the service of peace and social justice.
At 8 pm Voice of The City with J Cherry presents an hour of live local arts and culture.
At 9pm its Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat who’s got a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers.
At 10:30 it’s time for some random risky vinyl with Avery on Record Roulette. Then Hardly Strictly Bluegrass with DJ Sleepy Girl take over at 11:30.
Monica brings you 6ix degrees of Bowie at 12:30 followed by a weekly spotlight on Elvis Costello on Declan McManus: International Art Thief.
