Good evening, it’s Friday, February 15th and this is the Jive at Five – WESU’s Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. We hope life is getting back to normal following the historic blizzard of 2013, and its aftermath. Many thanks to all of the public works and parks dept. employees, contractors, volunteers, good neighbors and first responders who have worked tirelessly in the best interest of whole community during this challenging time.

Here’s a run sown of some of what’s scheduled to happen in the community this week. Keep in mind that many venues and business were set back by the unprecedented weather experience this week and as such may not be back up and running yet. We suggest you check with venues directly to make sure they are open for business and are back on schedule.

Over at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown tonight Shawn Taylor’s Wandering Roots Trio & the Brian Dolzani Duo play “Fresh new songs, Deep Ol’ Roots” beginning at 8pm. Saturday mornings at The Buttonwood Tree mean Chi Quong (Chee Gwong), Yoga, and spiritual alignment workshops. Saturday afternoon at 3 there is an opening reception for this month’s Art Gallery show celebrating the work of Peruvian born visual artist, Juan Carlos Bautista’s “Poetic Art”. Saturday night at 7pm, Steven and Resa Ferreira present Streetlight Stories: “Endings and Beginnings” for an evening of stories about healing and transformation, for adults. Each Sunday, Food Not Bombs shares food at 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood. All are welcome to enjoy a free vegetarian meal. And, you can help prepare it beforehand at First Church on Court Street at 11:30 am. Sunday afternoon at 4pm is the monthly gathering, Poetry Potluck, an opportunity for people who enjoy poetry to get together to share and discuss their favorite works. At Café Nine in New Haven tonight The Greg Sherrod Band and The New Dirty make for a night of rock ‘n roll. Saturday at 4pm it’s the weekly Saturday Afternoon Jazz Jam w/this week’s host Tony Dioguardi and Friends. Saturday night Daphne Lee Martin is celebrating her new release, “Moxie” also appearing is Ellison Jackson. Sunday’s Sunday-After-Supper Jam will be hosted by Dom Zullo and the Cafe Nine All Stars. Up in Hartford at Blackeyed Sally’s tonight Shaka and the Soul Shakers perform their Louisiana sound along with Two Virgins. This is a Middletown shout-out as both bands have roots in our area. At Toads Place in New Haven tonight The Black Solidarity Conference At Yale presents a performance by the Hip Hop Collective, Phony Ppl. Sunday at Toad’s Gorilla Music presents the New Haven Battle Of The Bands. More can be found online at toadsplace.com

Saturday night the Wesleyan University Center for the Arts presents “Glass Guignol (geen gnol): The Brother/Sister Play” directed by Lee Breuer, who explores the life and work of Tennessee Williams in this production.
Also, on Saturday evening the Wesleyan University Center for the Arts presents: The Graduate Recital of Brian Parks entitled “At Wesleyan 2007-2013” at Memorial Chapel, on High Street at 8pm. This event is free and open to the public. more online at www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

The Rusted Keys, the acoustic duet of Diane Kozikowski & Dave Downs, play on the third Sunday morning of every month, this Sunday, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Higher Grounds, 70 Main Street, East Hampton. Call 860-467-6643. The Keys perform a style of music they call “Nouveau Croon”.

At 7pm on Sunday, The Oddfellows Playhouse plays host to a night of comedy. Come be a part of an Improv event – live, unscripted, and unpredictable. Audience participation is welcomed. The Great Make Believe Society and Members of Sam Shaw’s Improv Boot Camp Workshop will be joining forces for this comedy event. Now here’s a rundown of cinema off the beaten track, here in Central Connecticut:

At Real Art Ways in Hartford, Oscar-nominated short films, both animated and live-action, make up the bulk of the weekend schedule and through next Wednesday. More can be found online at realartways.org.

At Cinestudio, Trinity College’s cinema, they are showing the 1942 black and white classic Casablanca starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Sunday Cinestudio kicks off a run of the newest film by Italian director Paolo Sorrentino, “This must be the Place”. Details online at www.cinestudio.org.

Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05 to 6:00pm it’s  Wild Wild Live with MC Apper

A sneak peek into the magical live music scene of Wes. Tune in for in-station sets from campus bands and recordings of up-and-coming artists’ campus shows.

From 6:00 to 6:30pm  it’s Free Speech Radio News – Your daily dose of alternative international news and reporting from the Pacifica Network.

For the next half hour, until 7pm you have the Middletown Youth Radio Project – A weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

At 7, until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee – Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10pm, we take it  From the Otherside with  Rok-A-Dee – The Voice of Hartford, including local artists from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He also features upcoming artists performing Caribbean R & B, Soca and international music.

From 10 until Midnight, take in  the sounds of Rumba en el Patio  with Michael - Classic Salsa for the dancers, Afro-Latin Big Band for the discerning ear. Join us as we adventure through the history of Musica Latina!

At Midnight until 2am Saturday we go  In the Master Bedroom, Under the Bed with  Dope Dave  until 3am – Celebrating conscious hip-hop and its offshoots & influences. Acrobatic emcees and down-tempo poets mix it up over varied oceans of sound.

At 2, to 3am it’s the Bassment Beats with DJ Lokash – the Real Hip-Hop is over here.

The next hour ’til 4am it’s Maximum Rock & Roll Radio – A weekly radio show featuring the best international DIY punk, garage rock and hardcore from the astounding, ever-growing Maximum Rock n roll radio record collection.

+Sing Out! Radio Magazine with Tom Druckenmiller comes on at 4 until 5am with a weekly, hour-long “magazine format” program, featuring interviews in addition to “live” and recorded traditional folk musics.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the  BBC World News  - a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6:00 to 7:00am it’s  the Celtic Café  with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

And now that the coffee’s hot enjoy Caffé Italiafrom 7:00 to 8:00am  with Francesco Fiumara, the former host of WESU’s own WESParla   – A weekly roundup of news, music and memories from Italy.
