Good evening, it’s Friday, February 22nd and this is the Jive at Five – WESU’s Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. Here’s a run sown of some of what’s scheduled in the community this weekend.

Over at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, tonight  at 8, it’s Ari and Mia Friedman, a sister duet harmonizing as they explore the traditions of Southern Appalachia and Northeastern fiddle music. On Saturday, community yoga is offered at the Buttonwood Tree beginning at 8:45am. Also on Saturday at the Buttonwood, it’s An Afternoon with Liela Marie Fuller, a poet whose first collection has been called an emotional roller coaster ride from joy and happiness to sadness and pain.  Then Saturday night at 8, enjoy Federico Ughi’s music at the Buttonwood. His music infuses the New York avant garde sound with a sense of melody inspired by the Italian classical and folk traditions of his childhood in Rome. Then Sunday, and every Sunday, Food Not Bombs shares food at 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood. All are welcome to enjoy a free vegetarian meal. The Rusted Keys, Diane Kozikowski & Dave Downs, play on the last Sunday morning of every month, this Sunday – beginning at 9:00 a.m.- at BrewBakers, 169 Main Street, Middletown, CT 06457 (860-852-0034). The Keys perform a style of music they call “Nouveau Croon”.

 

At Cafe’ Nine, in New Haven, this evening from 5 to 7, it’s the Friday Happy Hour , with Byl Cote, followed by Taco Hut Records & Promotion Presents Jose’s 25th Birthday Bash featuring Party Horse; Milksop: Unsung; and You Scream, I Scream. Saturday, it’s the Saturday Afternoon Jazz Jam, with host George Baker at Café Nine, followed at 8 by CT.com Royal Thunder; with Ancient Wisdom; Bedroom Rehab Corporation; and Stone Titan. Sunday, from 4 to 7, it’s the Bluegrass Jam at Café Nine, hosted by Stacy Phillips. That’s followed at 7 by the Sunday After Supper Jam, with host Dom Zullo and the Café Nine All Stars. Down in New Haven at Toad’s Place tonight once again it’s the award-winning Shakedown, playing the Dead and beyond. Also playing are Down-Stairs Sally and Eggy & the Delegates. On Saturday at 7:30, the Greater Middletown Concert Association presents “Maria de Buenos Aires,” an opera by the Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla, including tango dance pieces, at the MHS Performing Arts Center, 200 LaRosa Lane (off Newfield Street) in Middletown. Now here’s a rundown of cinema off the beaten track, here in Central Connecticut:

At Real Art Ways in Hartford, Oscar-nominated short films, both animated and live-action, make up the bulk of the schedule through tonight. Friday through next Thursday brings the film “Searching for Sugar Man,” nominated for an Oscar for best documentary feature, to Real Art Ways. Also on Friday: Michelle Ellsworth’s “Preparations for the Obsolescence of the Y Chromosome.” More can be found online at realartways.org.

At Cinestudio, Trinity College’s cinema, tonight through Saturday, it’s “Skyfall,” nominated for five Academy Awards. Then Sunday brings “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” another Oscar nominee. The film was made by Wesleyan film grads. Times and other details at www.cinestudio.org.

From 6:00 to 6:30pm 
it’s Free Speech Radio News – Your daily dose of alternative international news and reporting from the Pacifica Network.

For the next half hour, until 7pm you have the Middletown Youth Radio Project – A weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

At 7, until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee – Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10pm, we take it
 From the Otherside with 
Rok-A-Dee – The Voice of Hartford, including local artists from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He also features upcoming artists performing Caribbean R & B, Soca and international music.

From 10 until Midnight, take in
 the sounds of Rumba en el Patio 
with Michael
- Classic Salsa for the dancers, Afro-Latin Big Band for the discerning ear. Join us as we adventure through the history of Musica Latina!

At Midnight until 2am Saturday we go 
In the Master Bedroom, Under the Bed with 
Dope Dave 
until 3am – Celebrating conscious hip-hop and its offshoots & influences. Acrobatic emcees and down-tempo poets mix it up over varied oceans of sound.

At 2, to 3am it’s the Bassment Beats with DJ Lokash – the Real Hip-Hop is over here.

The next hour ’til 4am it’s Maximum Rock & Roll Radio – A weekly radio show featuring the best international DIY punk, garage rock and hardcore from the astounding, ever-growing Maximum Rock n roll radio record collection.

+Sing Out! Radio Magazine with Tom Druckenmiller comes on at 4 until 5am with a weekly, hour-long “magazine format” program, featuring interviews in addition to “live” and recorded traditional folk musics.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the 
BBC World News 
- a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6:00 to 7:00am it’s
 the Celtic Café
 with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagherpresenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.
