Staff Notes – 5/5/19
Final Staff Meeting — 5/5/19
Welcome to our final staff meeting of the year, it is indeed hard to believe it is already, here!
Many thanks to you all for a great year and special thanks to our Board and all of the graduating seniors!
- Super exciting to see so many staff members participating in our board election including many new faces and several community volunteers!
- JCCP Open house invitation: Tuesday 4:30 all are welcome – next year’s board members – would be great to see you there! Allbritton 3rd floor. Jen, Dillon, and BM will be there. Can meet Clifton and other from Center Prison Education and other parts of the Jewett Center for Community Partnerships
updates and reminders:
Quick follow-up note Absences: As mentioned in our last meeting, there are still staff members who think it is ok to simply ski their show when something else comes up!
- As a reminder – Regardless of your situation, you are responsible for knowing when you are on air and for making sure that air time is covered, even when you cannot make it.
ANY TIME YOU NEED TO MISS YOUR SHOW, PROTOCOL IS TO INFORM THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR AND OR GM
Technical stuff:
- continued website work
- Computer problems Easter Weekend that affected NPR feed has been resolved
- Online archives should be fixed, at this point. The developer is keeping audio from the last week up a bit longer than the normal 2 week period so folks have time to download. Let us know if you have issues
Profanity is not allowed before 10pm and can only come from recorded sources the fine can be $250K!!!!!!! – This is why BM can be HARSH on folks who disregard this, perhaps, MOST IMPORTANT RULE. A fine like that would likely put WESU out of business FOREVER end our 80 year legacy. Is a wonder it hasn’t happened yet, given the nonchalant attitude some DJs have about this rule.
Phone coupler – Callers are not allowed to curse on air period and must be warned before going live. The show host is responsible for all and any guest behavior in the studio and will be held accountable.
Pledge Drive
- 2 weeks in with less than $5K (including the record fair and all donations since January) we have barely scratched the surface. If this is how it goes, we are in trouble!
- It’s not just about playing the promos and asking people to donate. ITS ABOUT BRINGING IN THE DONATIONS THAT WE NEED TO PAY FOR OUR OPERATIONS. As WESU broadcasters it is OUR JOB to convince listeners and supporters that the service we provide is worth parting with their hard earned money!
- Luckily, we will have our physical and email campaigns yet to set in motion. With the 80th anniversary stuff happening, and tech issues, BM has been a beet backed up.
- Staff merch deal = Short sleeved @ $10, LS @ $15, Totes @$20, Hoods @ $40?
- Volunteers to help with a MERCH TABLE IN USDAN?
Summer Program updates:
- 80th Anniversary committee
- Unless there are objections or we overlooked someone’s interest, per my recollection Jen is the CV co- Chair and Dillon was the student co-chair? Jen and Dillon will take charge over the next few weeks and keep you posted over the summer:
- 80 Events – While our recent lecture series features three amazing lectures by internationally acclaimed examples of how College and community radio can be leveraged to empower marginalized voices, communities, and cultures, it would have been nice to see more people in attendance. I know there’s a lot of competition and we will work on finding community partners to get more butts in seats but it would have been nice to see more than 5-10 WESU staff members supporting these events.
Working on great events for the Fall, including:
- free oldies concert downtown
- a one or two day symposium exploring on the roots of Hip Hop w films, lectures, and hopefully an old school house party thrown by one of the foundational groups of hip hop.
- WESU Booth at Car Show downtown – Seeking volunteers to help with that (JEN?)
- sponsoring community events that are in line with our mission/program
- Dinner and dancing at Zandri’s
- STILL OPEN TO OTHER IDEAS FROM OUT STAFF – think you can host an event that your listeners will support? LET’s try to make it happen!
Online 80th exhibit by Leith is now open! more to come
- Reel to reel tapes!
