Here’s a brief rundown of some of the cultural and entertaining events happening in our area this week:

Tonight here in Middletown, The Russell Library presents the writing workshop: “We Were There: Writing Your Military Experiences” under the direction of author Elisabeth Petry . This series invites veterans to share their stories in their own voices Thursdays – through Dec 27 at 7pmin Meeting Room 2www.russelllibrary.org

Tonight and on the third Thursday of every month, creative people come together for conversation, art and music at Real Art Way’s Creative Cocktail hour in Hartford. This month’s offers a Silent Disco party where the crowd dances to DJ that plays through individual wireless headphones.

Friday night at The Buttonwood Tree welcomes Joe Flood back to the stage for a double bill with George Breakfast for an evening of American music called A Window Shoppers X-Mas. Saturday brings The Annual staged reading of Dylan Thomas’ “A Child’s Christmas in Wales”  performed live by Peter Loffredo accompanied by Eric Esposito with two Shows at 3:00 and 7:00 pm.  Admission by donations plus a non-perishable food item for The Amazing Grace Pantry.  Saturday evening’s appearance by Jen Hill at The Buttonwood has been postponed. 

Each Sunday, Food Not Bombs shares food in front of the Buttonwood Tree.  You’re invited to help prepare them prepare their vegetarian meal at the First Church on Court Street at 11:30 am.

Throughout December, you can catch a photography exhibit by none other than WESU’s own DJ Bill Revill, host of our Tuesday evening Folks music show, the Acoustic Blender will be exhibited. It’s an eclectic selection of subjects that includes musicians, landscapes, seascapes, local agricultural fairs and more.  Tonight, Café Nine BURLESQUE-A-PADES presents “HOLIDAY INN”: A rocking holiday burlesque spectacular direct from NYC. Friday, FAKE FOUR Presents: Ceschi & Anonymous Inc. for an evening of  live progressive instrumental hip hop / electronic music. Saturday’s Afternoon Jazz Jam is hosted by George Baker this week.  Saturday night Café Nine presents Rocking around the Beehive Tree with Christine Ohlman and Rebel Montez w/ special guests The MIghty Soul Drivers. SUNDAY evening Café nine presents the JEWMONGOUS – Holiday Comedy Songfest .  More can be found cafenine.com

Up in Hartford at Blackeyed Sally’s tonight, Hartford native Steve Balkun’s Blues Band to Sally’s. The Colby’s Xmas Stocking Stuffer takes the Sally’s stage for an evening of Louisiana spiced music.  More can be found online at blackeyedsallys.com

Down at Toad’s Place in New Haven Friday night brings the return of “Dirty” John Valby’s XXX-Mas show. Saturday night brings Kung Fu’s Christmas Spectacular featuring Break Science, Viral sound, and connection.  This is event is also a Toy drive for needy kids.

On the lily pad stage at Toad’s Saturday night Afton presents over 10 local bands. Sunday night you can catch Steady habits, Wess Meets West, and The Royal Swindle on the Lily pad Stage.  More information about all Toad’s shows can be found at www.toadsplace.com

Now Here’s a rundown of cinema off the beaten path here in Central Connecticut:

At Real Art Ways in Hartford tonight you can catch “The Flat”, “a film that begins as a family quest but evolves into a gripping study of know-don’t-tell reticence and the umbilical tie of a lost homeland.”  

Also tonight, Real Art Ways, there will be no films shown Thursday night. Friday Real Art Ways opens a run of “In the Family” a drama about an adopted child caught in a custody battle after one of his fathers dies unexpectedly.  Saturday brings Real Art Ways shows Best of NY Int’l Children’s Film Festival Kid Flix Mix 2012 on the screen at 2pm offering a colorful collection of short films from around the world, suited for audiences, ages 4 to 8. Through Friday, Cinestudio, Trinity College’s cinema, is now showing Cloud Atlas the film adaptation of a book by British author David Mitchell wherein six interwoven stories, featuring a 19th century bisexual musician in Belgium, and a fast-food worker of the totalitarian future are interweaved.
