Good afternoon, it’s Thursday, August 30th, and this is the Jive at Five – WESU’s Daily community calendar and rundown of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. Here’s a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown tonight at Laboca restaurant on Main St, you can catch the new free weekly series:  LaBOCA JAZZ – THURSDAYS from 8-11pm. This week’s event features The Airborne Jazz group, a multi-cultural Contemporary Jazz group based out of New Haven. www.labocaonmain.com

Down in New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight  it’s Rohn Lawrence and Friends play jazz, funk, and R&B. Friday evening the B-Stars and Big Fat Combo take the stage. The B-Stars are a San Francisco-based country combo playing honky tonk and hillbilly hits.

Saturday, at 4:30 it’s Café Nine’s weekly Afternoon Jazz Jam with this week’s host, Mike Coppola. Later onm Saturday night Café Nine presents Patrick Sweany; Joe Fletcher & the Wrong Reasons; and the Danglers. Sunday, it’s the Sunday-After-Supper Jam, with host Kevin Saint James and the Legendary Café Nine All-Stars. Information at www.CafeNine.com .

Also down in New Haven, at Toad’s Place, tonight brings a mixtape release show: NEW ENGLISH PRESENTS: CT ON DECK – SMOKING ACES, hosted by the CT Battle League featuring Jitta On The Track, Danimal Lector with DJ Semi, M.A.R., Scot Double and more. Tomorrow/Friday at 8 p.m., the Cosmic Dust Bunnies Headline a show at Toad’s with Seed, The Alchemystics, and Vasudo opening the show and Deph (spinning between sets). Sunday at 9 p.m. brings the annual Toad’s place Labor Day Funkfest featuring Rearview, Fear The State, D.K.B., and  Greg Sherrod. Canned food donations will be collected. This weekend The Matabassett Canoe Club at Harbor Park in Middletown presents live music Friday Night with The David Davis Project. Saturday  afternoon  Tony Gabrielle performs from 3-7pm and The ICE-9 Trio takes the stage from 7-10pm. Tomorrow night The Lucky Peterson band, performs at Black-eyed Sally’s in Hartford. On Saturday at Sally’s, it’s the All Star Blues Jam. More details at www.blackeyedsallys.com

The Russell Knitters meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Russell Library on Saturday in Middletown. The Russell Knitters are an enthusiastic group of knitters who are willing to share ideas and expertise. No registration is required. Bring your knitting projects! www.russelllibrary.org

Saturday night American Roots Singer/Songwriter Kerri Powers takes the Buttonwood Tree stage. Food Not Bombs shares food starting around 1 pm in front of The Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. All are welcome and invited to help prepare vegetarian food at the First Church at 190 Court Street at 11:30 am. Fall is in the air, which means it’s time for New England Agricultural fair season. Opening Friday evening and running through Monday, the Haddam Neck Fair offers live music, a carnival midway, concessions, a petting zoo, food, agricultural and craft exhibits, a circus, children’s contests and the ever-popular horse-, truck-, and tractor pulls! There is live music on band stand each night, Friday features the local talent of Rock Landing and Organized Chaos. Saturday features The Monthei Brothers Band and The McLovins.  Sunday brings a great musical lineup starting at 1pm featuring Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters, String Theorie,Heirlooms,  and Shakedown. It’s also farmers’ market season and here are a few in our area:

The Durham Farmers’ Market is open every Thursday on the Town Green on Main St,  from 3 to 6:30 pm, through September. The longstanding Middletown Farmers’ market at the South Green is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm through October. The Middletown North End Farmers Market is open 10 am to 2 pm every Friday and is located at the corner of Liberty and Main Streets in Middletown.

Now here’s a quick rundown of cinema off the beaten path here in central CT this weekend:

 Real Art Ways in Hartford is currently showing  ‘Ai Weiwei (pronounced I way way): Never Sorry’  through next Thursday. This is a gripping documentary following the trials and tribulations of China’s most famous international artist, and one its most outspoken domestic critics.

Starting Friday and running through next Thursday at Real Art Ways, the film “Elena,” winner of a special jury prize at Cannes, offers a modern twist on the classic noir thriller. Tickets, info and times at www.realartways.org

Through Saturday at Cinestudio, The Trinity College cinema, You can catch director Ridley Scott’s futuristic film“Prometheus”.  Sunday begins showings of “Safety Not Guaranteed,”  winner of the Sundance Film Festival’s Best Dramatic Screenplay Award. Tickets and times at www.cinestudio.org

At 6pm it’s Free Speech Radio News for your evening dose of alternative international news and reporting from the Pacifica Network.

At 6:30 Psychedelic Rick Sits in for Minister Latrecia. Who knows what he’s got in store?

At 8 Catch Evening Jazz with Bill Denert, where hearing is the best experience as bill presents a broad range of swing, be-bop, and avant garde Jazz as well as a sprinkling of new releases

From 9:30-11pm it’s a special Thursday night edition Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill, an eclectic selection of Americana, country, folk, and other music that has a roots influence.

At 11pm it’s Alphabet Soup with DJ Blaze. Each episode, DJ Blaze randomly selects a letter from the alphabet, and plays only bands or artists whose names start with that letter. This makes for a wild romp through WESU’s extensive music library, supported and guided by the interests of our listeners.

From 12:30-1:30am Sunspot Loops invites you to explore what’s new in the world and rearrange what exists into a form we can claim to understand.

At 1:30 The Graveyard with DJ Otto Nation presents an eclectic mix of music from the WESU collection of new releases.
