Good afternoon, it’s Monday, August 27th, and this is the Jive at Five – WESU’s Daily community calendar and rundown of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. Here’s a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area:
Mondays through Thursdays  from 10am-noon through the end of August, Stacey Stroka leads The Buttonwood Tree’s Open Arts & Crafts program. Everyone is welcome!
Tonight and every Monday night at the Buttonwood Tree, J-CHERRY hosts the ANYTHING GOES!” OPEN MIC. Signups begin at7:30pm. Performances start at 8:00pm.
Food Not Bombs shares food starting around 1 pm in front of The Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. All are welcome and invited to help prepare vegetarian food at the First Church at 190 Court Street at 11:30 am.  Also this Thursday here in Middletown, Klekolo World Coffee presents ‘In pursuit of some things trivial’ – where everyone will be split into teams of 2 to 4 people to have their knowledge tested. Prizes will be given to the top two teams.
The Middletown Commission on the Arts presents its annual Summer Sounds concert series on the City’s South Green (Union Park) on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer. Tomorrow’s performance, starting at 7 p.m., is by Elite Syncopation , playing Ragtime and early jazz.
The concerts are free and you are encouraged to bring lawn chairs/blankets. More information at arts2go.org.
Mattabesett Canoe Club at Harbor Park in Middletown presents a weekly Thursday night “Jazz on the River” series. For info and reservations call  860-347-9999
The Hartford Jazz Society brings live jazz tonight and every Monday night at 6 pm to Bushnell Park followed by a jam session at BlackeyedSallys in Hartford.
Then, at 8 p.m. BlackeyedSally’s brings Jazz Mondays to the stage, a chance for everyone from jazz aficionados to curious first-timers to taste what local talent has to offer, with regular special appearances by big-city jazz names. Details at jazzmondays.org
Tomorrow and every Tuesday night at Sally’s, it’sMichael Palin’s Other Orchestra, an 18-piece band. Get funky as they jam and work out new material. It’s free.
On Wednesday at Sally’s, it’s the Blues Jam with Tim McDonald, one of the longest-running blues jams in New England.Featuring a different host each week, you’ll hear some of the best musicians CT has to offer— it’s open to all ages (under 18 with a parent).
Thursday brings the Lucky Peterson band, the most dangerous triple threat working in the blues, to Blackeyed Sally’s. On Saturday at Sally’s, it’s the All Star Blues Jam.

Down in New Haven, at Toad’s Place, tonight brings A Night of Smooth Jazz with Rohn Lawrence & Friends to the stage. Doors open at 9; show starts at 9:30.
Every Wednesday at 10 p.m. at Toad’s, it’s the Dub Step party in Lilly’s Pad.
Thursday brings a mixtape release show: NEW ENGLISH PRESENTS: CT ON DECK – SMOKING ACES, hosted by the CT Battle League.
Friday at 8 p.m., it’s the Cosmic Dust Bunnies.
Sunday at 9 p.m. at Toad’s is the Labor Day Funkfest featuring Rearview. Canned food donations will be collected.More information at toadsplace.com.
Also in New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight is an Open Mic night with KrissSantala. Acoustic musicians and poets are welcome. Tomorrow, in the return of the Elm City Americana Series, Milksop:Unsung& special guests will play, sharing the stage with some of the area’s finest new roots/rock bands.
On Wednesday at Café Nine, it’s the Black Swans, with J Russell and the Knife Lickers. Thursday, at 9,  it’sRohn Lawrence and Friends, New Haven’s own master of jazz, funk and R&B. Friday’s 5-to-7 happy hour features Hatfield. Then at 8, it’s the B-Stars with Big Fat Combo. The B-Stars are a San Francisco-based country combo playing honky tonk and hillbilly hits.
Saturday, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., it’s the Afternoon Jazz Jam w/ host the Mike Coppola, followed at 9 by Patrick Sweany; Joe Fletcher & the Wrong Reasons; and the Danglers. Sunday, it’s the Sunday-After-Supper Jam, with host Kevin Saint James and the Legendary Café Nine All-Stars. Information at CafeNine.com.
Back in Middletown, the Russell Knitters meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Russell Library. The Russell Knitters are an enthusiastic group of knitters who are willing to share ideas and expertise. No registration is required. Bring your knitting projects!
It’s farmers’ market season and here are a few in our area:
The Durham Farmers’ Market is open every Thursday on the Town Green on Main St,  from 3 to 6:30 pm, through September. The longstanding Middletown Farmers’ market at the South Green is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm through October. The Middletown North End Farmers Market is open 10 am to 2 pm every Friday and is located at the corner of Liberty and Main Streets in Middletown.
Fall is in the air, which means it’s time for country fairs. Beginning Friday and running through Tuesday, the Haddam Neck Fair offers live music, horse rides, concessions, a petting zoo, food, exhibits, a circus, children’s contests and the ever-popular horse-, truck-, and tractor pulls! Now here’s a quick rundown of cinema off the beaten path here in central CT this weekend:
Tonight and running through Thursday, Real Art Ways in Hartford will be presenting ‘Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry’ – a gripping documentary following the trials and tribulations of China’s most famous international artist, and its most outspoken domestic critic.
Starting Friday and running through next Thursday at Real Art Ways, the film “Elena,” winner of a special jury prize at Cannes, offers a modern twist on the classic noir thriller. Tickets and times at realartways.org.
At Cinestudio in Hartford, tonight and tomorrow are your last chance to see “Moonrise Kingdom,” by director Wes Anderson.
Wednesday through Saturday at Cinestudio, it’s the futuristic “Prometheus,” by director Ridley Scott. Then Sunday begins showings of “Safety Not Guaranteed,”  winner of the Sundance Film Festival’s Best Dramatic Screenplay Award. Tickets and times at cinestudio.org.

Then, it’s Free Speech Radio News From The Pacifica Network, your daily dose of alternative international news and reporting from the Pacifica Network.
From 6:30 to 8 p.m., it’s75% Folk with Michael Benson, a serving of contemporary folk and acoustic music with side orders of blues, jazz, world, pop, movie soundtracks, readings and occasional live interviews. Bring a big plate.
From 8 to 9:30, it’s Beats to the Rhyme with Open I, touching on all things having to do with the golden era of Hip-Hop. A mix of hip-hop, jazz, soul, and funk. This will be Open I’s last show of the summer.
Then from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m., stay tuned for Aargh with Tom Gatzen. Cosmic, doom, and stoner metal.The Sounds of heaven crumbling.
From 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., it’s Anvil Isle with Nate, a musical monsoon of alternative, blues, dream, funk, hard rock, indie, punk, reggae, surf and world music. Bury your feet in the sand and let the waves come crashing through your speakers.
After that, till 3 a.m., it’s The Late Night Summer Concert Series with Psychedelic Rick, featuring live recordings of concerts in their entirety from a wide range of musical genres.
Then, from 3 to 4 a.m., it’s Maxim
um Rock and Roll Radio, featuring the best DIY punk, garage rock and hardcore from the astounding, ever-growing Maximum Rocknroll record collection.
The BBC World News Service kicks on at 4 a.m. and we begin tomorrow’s broadcast at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
