Good evening, it’s Monday, August 13th. This is the Jive at Five, WESU’s Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. Mondays through Thursdays  from 10am-noon during July and August, Stacey Stroka leads The Buttonwood Tree’s Open Arts & Crafts program. Everyone is welcome!

Every Monday night at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, J-CHERRY hosts the ANYTHING GOES!” OPEN MIC. Signups begin at7:30pm. Performances start at 8:00pm.

This Wednesday from 5 to 8 is the Middletown Gallery Walk, where North End Galleries, Shops, and Restaurants are collaborating to offer a community event.

Friday night Shawn Taylor and the Wandering Roots bring their gritty soul stirring vocals & poetic blue collar lyrics to the Buttonwood stage at 8.

Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. All are welcome to the meal and are also invited to help prepare the food at the First Church on Court Street at 11:30 am.

Tonight(Monday) and every Monday night down in New Haven, Rohn Lawrence and Friends make smooth jazz on the lily pad stage at Toad’s Place. Wednesday is always the weekly dubstep dance party, and Thursday brings renowned rapper DMX to the stage . Friday night is The Shakedown, featuring The Dead and Beyond and Dizzy Fish.  Saturday night Toads hosts La Coka Nostra, including members of the House of Pain, Non Phixion, and Special Teams. Wednesday at 9 Die Hipster presents the area’s hardest edge punk rockers. 
Thursday night MANIC PRODUCTIONS Presents: You Won’t; w/ Plume Giant; Laurelin Kruse, and Friday Night there will be a local punk rock n’ roll showcase featuring The Hulls and Defcon 5. •
Café nine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam will be hosted by Tony Dioguardi and Friends. Saturday is the ANTHRAX CLUB REUNION NIGHT: featuring Seizure; Lost Generation; 76% Uncertain; C.I.A.; Zombie Squad; and Skeletal Ambitions

The Middletown Commission on the Arts present their annual Summer Sounds concert series on the City’s South Green (Union Park) on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer. Tomorrow night features the Trevor Davis Quartet, bringing a jazz/swing sound with vocalist Karen Frisk. More information at arts2go.org.  

The Hartford Jazz Society brings live jazz every Monday night at 6 pm to Bushnell Park followed by a jam session at Blackeyed Sallys.
On Tuesday nights in Hartford at Blackeyed Sally’s you can catch Mike Palin’s Other Orchestra, an 18 piece jazz ensemble.  
Every wed at 8:00 pm Sally’s hosts one of the longest running open blues jams in New England!
Thursday night Little Ed & the Blues Imperials bring their raw-boned Chicago sound to the stage at Sally’s.

Friday night Sully’s Pub in Hartford host Wimbash 2012, The Annual musical gathering organized by Hartford native international musical legend and Bassist, Doug Wimbish of Living Colour, Tackheadd, and more. Also this Saturday the Caribbean-American Multi-Cultural Association of CT presents their first annual Tace Middletown: Trinidad Style Carnival Launching. Festivities will take place from 1 to 9:30 pm by the waterfront at Harbor Park here in Middletown. Here’s a quick rundown of cinema off the beaten path herein central CT this week.

Tonight and Tomorrow, Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartford, will be finishing its run of a digitally restored version of Jean Renoir’s 1937 film, Grand Illusion. Tomorrow through next Tuesday, Cinestudio will be presenting the recently released French film, The Grave-Digger’s Daughter.

Tonight through Thursday evening Real Art Ways in Hartford will continue viewings of ‘The Queen of Versailles’ an epic documentary following billionaires Jackie and David and their rags to riches story. This Friday Real Art Ways will begin their run of Chinese Take-Away, an Argentinian film about a Chinese man who can’t seem to find what he’s looking for in Buenos Aires, and a local man who tries to help him on his journey.

Tis the season for farmers’ markets and here are a few in our area: The Durham Farmers’ Market is open every Thursday on the Town Green on Main St, from 3 to 6:30 p.m., through September. The longstanding Middletown Farmers’ market at the South Green is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October. The Middletown North End Farmers Market is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Friday and is located at the corner of Liberty and Main Streets in Middletown.

From 11:30 – 12:30 Anvil Isle presents a musical monsoon of alternative rock, blues, dream, funk, hard rock, indie, punk, reggae, surf, and world music inviting you to bury your feet in the sand and hear the waves come crashing through your speakers.

From 12:30 – 3:00 Psychedelic Rick presents the late night Summer Concert Series featuring live concerts in their full glory. Tonight’s late night concert series will feature 2 concerts. First up: The Brand New Heavies live  in London in 2009. After that Tune in for Miles Davis live in concert at the Filmore East recorded back in 1970.

From 3 – 4am Maximum Rock and Roll Radio features an hour of international loud rock and punk.

The BBC World News Service kicks on at 4AM and we begin tomorrow’s broadcast at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
