Good evening, it’s Wednesday, July 25th and this is the Jive at Five, WESU’s Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. Down in New Haven’s Café Nine tonight, you can catch an early show starting at 8 with violinist Ada Pasternack, followed by a late show at 10 Pat Dalton and friends. Thursday night, Jazz Haven presents an early show by the Abe Ovadia Group, followed by the Thirsty Thursday Trio at 10. Friday will hold an ode to The Replacements, featuring a screening of Color Me Obsessed: A Film About the Replacements. Café Nine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam will be hosted by  Tony Dioguardi and Friends this week. Saturday night  BLUE PLATE RADIO and TASTE OF NEW HAVEN Present: a summer evening of culinary delights strolling through Downtown New Haven and ending with a world-class jazz, funk, and R&B show! Tonight at 8:30 and on all Wednesday nights in Hartford, Blackeyed Sally’s hosts one of the longest running open blues jams in New England! This week’s session is hosted by Tim McDonald.   Reverend Payton’s Big Damn Band is on stage Thursday night at Sally’s . Friday night blues performer Dave Keller takes the stage at 9pm and Saturday night, the Delta Generators take the stage at Black-eyed Sally’s. More can be found at  blackeyedsallys.com

This evening, the Friends of Long Hill Estate  ‘Music at the Mansion’ series at the Wadsworth Mansion in  Middletown features the swing sounds of Eight to the Bar at 6:30, with the grounds open for picnicking at 5:30. More can found online at wadsworthmansion.com.

Also tonight, Manic Productions presents a free 21-and-over show featuring Filligar, Turf War, and The Joiner Inners at BAR in New Haven.

Saturday at Center Church on the Green on Temple Street in New Haven “The Tallest Man on Earth” and “Strand of Oaks” will perform at  7:00pm more info can be found at manicproductions.org

Down in New Haven, at Toads Place, tonight is the weekly dubstep dance party, and Thursday night will see Ingrid Michaelson on the main stage. Friday night is the Summer Slam Fest and Saturday night SHAKEDOWN plays the Grateful DEAD AND BEYOND on the Toad’s main stage.  Rhythmic Circus and Carbonated Insight open that show. Here in Middletown on Friday night Vinnies Jump ‘n’ Jive presents a salsa dance party.  More about dance classes and events for young and old can be found at vinniesjumpandjive.com.

The Mattabesett Canoe Club at Harbor Park in Middletown presents a weekly Thursday night “Jazz on the River ” series. For info call  860-347-9999

Also Thursday night, Infinity Hall in Norfolk presents Grammy winner Marc Cohn followed by the Brubeck Brothers quartet on Friday night. The Oak Ridge Boys take the stage Saturday night and Tommy Emmanuel returns to Infinity Hall on Sunday. more at www.inifinityhall.com

On Friday night, at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, J Cherry and the Strawberries will perform a variety show entitled Voice of the City.

Saturday night is a double header with Alli and the Oxen Frees and folk group Mumblty-Peg performing a benefit concert, with proceeds going towards Pathways To Go, Inc. The show starts at 8pm.

Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. This Saturday also brings the return of the CT Traditional Jazz Fest to SHERATON FOUR POINTS HOTEL in Meriden.  This year’s festival features The Midiri Brothers, Galvanized Jazz Band, The Heartbeat Jazz Band, and more.  More can be found online at greatctjazz.org

Tis the season for farmers’ markets and here’s a few in our area:
The Durham Farmers Market is open every Thursday on the Town Green  on Main St,  from 3-6:30pm now thru Sept.   The Middletown North End Farmers Market is open from10am-2pm every Friday and is located at the corner of  Liberty and Main Streets. The longstanding Middletown farmers’ market is located on the south Green and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m now through October.

Here’s a quick rundown of cinema off the beaten path here in central CT this week:
Tonight, Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartford, closes their run of “Moonrise Kingdom” by American film director Wes Anderson.  Tomorrow night Cinestudio presents a week long run of the dramedy, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” Show schedules and descriptions can be found online at cinestudio.org

Through Thursday, Real Art Ways in Hartford continues their run of Polisse, the Cannes Fim Festival winner that follows the daily lives of a tight-knit team of men and women working in the Child Protection Unit of the Parisian police. Friday Real Art Ways begins a run of Paul Williams: Still Alive, a documentary that tracks down the actor/singer/songwriter. Tickets, times, and more at www.realartways.org
