Here in Middletown Wednesday evening at the buttonwood tree, you can join the students of the “Green School” for an evening of prose readings and music. The Green School is a group of children from across CT who are home-schooled and meet Wednesdays at The Buttonwood Tree and at The Green Street Art Center for group classes.
Thursday night acclaimed Jazz pianist, composer, and educator, Noah Baerman returns to the Buttonwood Tree to celebrated the release of his seventh album. “Turtle Steps.” For this performance he will be playing some new music with some old friends.
Friday night, Amalgamated Muckreturns to the Buttonwood tree in celebration of their new CD. Since playing shows together in Small Town Concert Series and joining musical forces, the melodic amalgamation of Lauren Agnelli with Matthew Male, Brian Wolfe, Rose Bengston and Rodney Maxwell has become more than just some pretty mucking about. Amalgamated Muckenjoys performing a mix of traditional and original Americana – roots, country, and folk music with rock & blues influences.
Saturday Night the Riverwood Poetryseries returns to the buttonwood tree with a Memorial Day Commemoration by Lisa Siedlarz and Michael Lepore. An open mic follows the main event and poets are invited to honor the memory of those who gave their lives in our nation’s service. Admission is free though donations gratefully accepted. Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. All are welcome and invited to help prepare the food at the First Church of Christ on Court Street in Middletown at 11:30 am.

Down in New Haven tonight, Café nine presents the Canadian singer/songwriter Duo, Madison Violet. Wednesday night Chuck Prophet & the Mission Express take the stage. Thursday, the BLUE PLATE RADIO JAZZ SERIES Presents: Elan Trotman presenting his blend of Jazz and Caribbean music. Friday Night Francine Reed sings gospel, country, rhythm and blues in an 8pm set at the Nine. Later at 10pm Fernando Pinto Presents: Jim Carpenter and the Hoolios; w/ Dogbite for a night of Memphis echo and reverb touched rootsy, rockabilly and country music. Café nine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam will be hosted by George Baker this week. Saturday Night it’s a local heavy metal showcase celebrating KHRIST HAVOK’S 30TH BIRTHDAY featuring Death Prayers; Eyes of the Dead; and Left In Ruins. Friday night in Hartford, Real Art Ways presents an evening of live music at 8pm by Eric Ross, who will perform on piano, guitar, synthesizer and Theremin. Compositions include elements of jazz, classic, serial, and avant garde. Mary Ross’s videos, projected in performance, are organized, arranged and edited to his music. Now here’s a brief rundown of out the main Stream Cinema offerings in central CT.
Tonight, Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartford, ends their run of “In Darkness” which is based on the true story of a Polish petty thief and sanitation worker, and the disparate group of Jews hiding in the sewers who must rely on him for protection during World War II.
Wednesday through Saturday Cinestudio shows the new Iranian film, “A Separation”, winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. The film offers a fascinating look at a middle class couple in Iran who are contemplating divorce. Sunday Cinestudio will begin showing a new 35 mm print of Terence Davies’ “The Long Day Closes”. Tonight Real Art Ways in Hartford is not showing any films. Wednesday and Thursday, Real Art Ways continues their run of “Delicacy”, the new French drama about life, loss, and love. Friday Night Real Art Ways opens a run of the new documentary on the late king of Reggae Music, Bob Marley.
