at 5:30 this evening, The Middletown Commission on the Arts will present Arts Advocacy Awards this month to two organizations who have have significantly contributed to the city’s cultural and artistic enrichment and/or have shown extraordinary support and initiative for the arts. The Greater Middletown Concert Association and The Buttonwood Tree were chosen as recipients by the Arts Commission after it received a number of suggestions from residents. Mayor Daniel T. Drew will be presenting proclamations at the Buttonwood Tree tonight at 5:30in a reception hat is free and open to the public.  Light refreshments will be served. On behalf of the WESU crew, we offer our hearty congratulations to both organizations for their great work within the community.

Also happening Every Monday night in Middletown, J-CHERRY hosts the ANYTHING GOES!” OPEN MIC WITH AT THE BUTTONWOOD TREE on Main Street.  Signups begin at7:30pm. Performances start at 8:00pm.

Wednesday evening you can join the students of the Green School for an evening of prose readings and music. The Green School is a group of children from across CT who are home-schooled and meet Wednesdays at The Buttonwood Tree and at The Green Street Art Center for group classes.

Thursday night acclaimed Jazz pianist, composer, and educator, Noah Baerman returns to the Buttonwood Tree to celebrated the release of his seventh album. “Turtle Steps.” For this performance he will be playing some new music with some old friends.

Friday night, Amalgamated Muck returns to the Buttonwood tree in celebration of their new CD. Since playing shows together in Small Town Concert Series and joining musical forces, the melodic amalgamation of Lauren Agnelli with Matthew Male, Brian Wolfe, Rose Bengston and Rodney Maxwell has become more than just some pretty mucking about. Amalgamated Muck enjoys performing a mix of traditional and original Americana – roots, country, and folk music with rock & blues influences.  

Saturday Night the Riverwood Poetry series returns to the buttonwood tree with a Memorial Day Commemoration by Lisa Siedlarz and Michael Lepore.  An open mic follows the main event and poets are invited to  honor the memory of those who gave their lives in our nation’s service.  Admission is free though donations gratefully accepted. Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. All ares welcome and invited to help prepare vegetarian food at the First Church on 190 Court Street at 11:30 am.

Later on Sunday, “Coming to the mic” is an open mic that will be filmed in its entirety to be aired on Comcast TV. Only those who agree to be viewed on TV should perform. Saturday Night Toad’s place presents REGGAE SPRINGFEST 2012 on the Main stage featuring, All Good Feel Good Collective, Balcony, The Green Line, Mitigue, I Anbassa, and King Charlton. Also on Saturday on the Toads Lily pad stage, AFTON PRESENTS 7 local bands and artists. Also down in New Haven tonight at 7:30 pm you can catch the Fist Full of Jokes COMEDY SERIES  at Café Nine. After the laughs died down, there will an Acoustic Open Mic w/ Miss Kriss Tuesday Night at 9 pm. Café nine presents the Canadian singer/songwriter Duo, Madison Violet. 

Wednesday night at 8 pm doors Chuck Prophet & the Mission Express take the stage. Thursday The BLUE PLATE RADIO JAZZ SERIES Presents: Elan Trotman presenting his blend of Jazz and Caribbean music.

Friday Night  Francine Reed singsgospel, country, rhythm and blues at 8pm. Later at 10pm Fernando Pinto

Presents: Jim Carpenter and the Hoolios; w/ Dogbite for a night of Memphis echo and reverb touched  rootsy, rockabilly and country music. Café nine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam will be hosted by George Baker this week. Saturday Night it’s a local heavy metal showcase celebrating KHRIST HAVOK’S 30TH BIRTHDAYfeaturing Death Prayers; Eyes of the Dead; and Left In Ruins. Friday night in Hartford, Real Art Ways presents an evening of live music at 8pm by Eric Ross, who will perform on piano, guitar, synthesizer and Theremin. Compositions include elements of jazz, classic, serial, and avant garde. Mary Ross’s videos, projected in performance, are organized, arranged and edited to his music. Tonight and tomorrow at Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartford, offers screenings of In Darkness” which is based on the true story of a Polish petty thief and sanitation worker, and the disparate group of Jews hiding in the sewers who must rely on him for protection during World War II.

Wednesday through Saturday Cinestudio shows the new Iranian film, “A Separation”, winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. The film offers a fascinating look at a middle class couple in Iran who are contemplating divorce. Tonight Wednesday and Thursday,  Real Art Ways in Hartford continues their run of “Delicacy”, the new French drama about life, loss, and love. From 1-3:00 Psychedelic Rick presents the late night Summer Concert Series featuring live concerts in their full glory.

The BBC World News Service kicks on at 4AM and we begin tomorrow’s broadcast at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
